Diversity In The Workplace

Diversity teaches us to accept. I have lived in a very diverse community for much of my life. Highland Park consists of a lot of white people, but also there are a lot of Mexican immigrants. Diversity is very important on a workplace because it create a respectful environment, reduce conflict, help business reputations, and avoid legal issues. This accepting and managing of these cultural differences has over the years become an important factor of organizational success.

Diversity helps cultures and traditions to loosen the grip on racism, discrimination and things like that.

Famous author and speaker, Maya Angelou once said ““It is time for parents to teach young people early on that in diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” Diversity can be defined as people coming together from different nationalities, races, religions, sexes and sexual orientation to form a group, organization or community. A diverse organization is one that values the difference and similarities in people. It is one that recognizes that different people can bring unique ideas and perception to different things. Diversity is what keeps the world spinning because without diversity everyone would be the same and you wouldn’t be able to truly understand yourself. When people are exposed to diversity from a young age, it better prepares them for being in a community later. Students need to learn about diversity so that they can be better citizens in their communities. They would also be able to understand that everyone is different and those differences should be valued instead of discriminated against. Diversity is important because it helps people feel more confident in themselves when they are different from the social norms. Without diversity, people would not be able to appreciate the uniqueness of others, but would rather be the same as everyone else.

Diversity is to value that we are all unique and yet similar. We have different needs, interests, learning styles, language and personality etc.

From my point of view, diversity means inclusion, which means our ability to include difference. Diversity does not mean race, nationality, gender or sexual orientation, it’s the way we interact and take those different from us. Diversity can also create curiosity. When I am exposed to different people and cultures, I like to learn more about the different groups that I have encountered. This helped me to understand how and why things work the way they do, it also led to the idea that we could find a way to make a difference.

What is diversity? A simple definition of diversity means differences. Diversity does not only mean differences between the Black population and the White population. Diversity speaks to differences among culture, race, ethnicity, religion, and sexual orientation of all people to name a few. To function in our changing world, I think it is important to have an understanding and appreciation of diversity. Some people talk about having tolerance, but I think it is more important for people to have an appreciation. Tolerance means to put up with something that is bothersome. It would be great if everybody could be aware of our differences and learn to appreciate others for who they are.

Why should we talk about diversity? There is diversity in every aspect of life in which we encounter daily. Diversity is important to make the world unique and flowing. Throughout a normal day, there are times in which a person may not notice how diverse things are around them. Diversity seems to come up very often when you start to talk about the work place.

I believe that "Diversity" plays important roles in our lives. Without diversity, we cannot widen our field of view. Diversity helps us to open up our eyes and our world. From reading the essay "How diversity makes us smarter", written by Katherine W Phillips, I learned that there are some negative effects brought up by the social diversity where dialog of inclusion is advanced, but mostly diversity is something that has positive effect in our society and even individual. I could also reflect and make connection with my experience of moving from non diverse community to diverse community.

From my experiences , I have learned the importance of diversity in any situation. While serving at my church in Bayonne this passed summer, I was surrounded by various people with different personalities and working skills. I now know, that being surrounded by diversity will help me to better cope with my responsibilities in the real world. Being a biology or chemistry major, I am setting myself up to be in a field where working with people and teamwork is essential.

In some ways I believe that diversity can be helpful in todays community and can help enlighten some typical stereotypes and cliche thoughts. If you are growing up around diverse people in your classrooms it can make diversity a lot less scary of a subject. “Diversity enhances creativity.”(Philips, Katherine W.) In the education system the eyes and little minds that are learning need creativity to thrive and show their own personality to others.

Diversity can be found anywhere and can always teach you something if you keep an open mind. I grew up relatively unaware of how different the world could be from my own life, but when I went to high school it was a wake up call for me. Diverse viewpoints and backgrounds can lead to the most amazing achievements and working together is the only way to get there.

It is not hard to figure out why diversity has become an important topic for the international arena. There are 196 countries in the world with about 196 different ideas they consider “traditional” or normal. Consider the US where it is a melting pot for many different cultures. The workers within any company can come from a diverse back ground just in the US, take that same business internationally and you have more diversity. Diversity is an advantage because with it comes different ideas and an effective work force.

Diversity is important to companies because with a diverse environment people can benefit and learn from others' ideas. Other reasons for the importance of diversity to many organizations are the recognition of differences as prerequisites for high performance and continuous improvement, enhancing the effectiveness and creativity of the organization, and valuing conflicts as opportunities for more effective decision-making and problem solving. Diversity has a major impact on our behaviors in the work place.
