I am very happy witht the progress that Vicky has made in her job so far. She has been with the Bureau about 8 months and she has become invaluable to us. She understands the division and bureau vision and direction. She is a real team player who actively participates in bureau meetings and activities such as coming up with a vision and mission statement for the PPI bureau.

What is diversity and what does it entail? Luther College defines diversity as “complex differences and similarities in perspectives, identities, and points of view among members of an institution as well as among individuals who make up the wider community.” Diversity has been a hot topic in today’s news and social networking arenas with the ever-changing race relations that are prevalent in our country and around the world. In the second scenario, I would ensure that all of my employees were familiar with the anti-discrimination policy, as well as diversity in the workplace. While I fully understand the concerns presented by the other workers and their feelings of being uncomfortable, I also lean toward the safety and welfare of the transgender individual if he was forced to utilize the bathroom he does not identify with. While unisex single stall bathrooms could effectively eliminate the concern that is presented by some of the other workers, it may not be financially feasible. However, I do believe that current bathroom stalls can be retrofitted to ensure a more private experience for everyone. Bathroom stalls should go from floor to ceiling and the gaps on the doors should be fixed to be completely enclosed. This would allow any gender access into the bathroom without privacy issues being a concern.

Diversity has impacts everywhere and has impacted and changed Certified Public Accountants (CPA’s)? CPA’s are accountant that are certified through a national organization. They maintain that all financial statements to be completely accurate. When you take history into account it was always just the white men that could do anything that required higher education. The United States is often referred to as a “melting pot” because of the diversity of its people. People from hundreds of countries with different cultures, languages, religious beliefs, and different ethnicities have come to the United States seeking a better opportunities and a better way of life. Melting pot is defined as “a place where a variety of races, cultures, or individuals assimilate into a cohesive whole” (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). For the purpose of analyzing diversity in the workplace, it is necessary to also define “cohesion.” Cohesion is defined as the act or state of sticking together tightly; especially: unity” (Merriam-Webster, n.d.).

I think it’s pretty common for people to picture a Caucasian male with a suit and briefcase when picturing someone with some high end cooperate job. We used to be able to blame this on the fact that many different races weren’t getting the same level of education. In these days, with everyone getting equal opportunities in education and more diversity in higher educational institutes, there should be no reason that races aren’t represented more equally when it comes to white collar jobs. Many studies have shown that more diverse economies make for much stronger ones. When businesses can accept the nation’s ever changing demographics, they obtain a more diverse and inclusive workforce which benefits them economically.

Furthermore, the power of context is the things in the environment can change people’s behaviors. This will let them know what kinds of actions are properly doing at what time. Lofferda proposes that some higher level people in the society always do not have good behaviors and take advantages of gays, she states that “the Supreme Court upheld a Cincinnati ordinance that denied gays and lesbians legal protection from discrimination in housing, employment, and other public accommodations” (249). This quote shows that even in higher government, the gays cannot get the same treatment like the housing and employees as the other residents. The surroundings around them are really terrible. They cannot get really benefits and advantages from the society or the government.

With both parents in the Navy, I was surrounded by a diverse, ever-changing populace for the majority of my life while we lived in Virginia Beach. My friends, classmates, and fellow city residents consisted of a myriad of different ethnicities, religions, and backgrounds. Being raised in such a diverse culture helped me foster an open mind and respect everyone. Additionally, growing up in a dual-military family I endured multiple moves and being separated from one of my parents for long periods of time. While troublesome, I feel this gave me a unique advantage. I have become self-reliant and I am more apt to take initiative than many of my peers. Why am I here? I am here because I am everywhere that I am invited. I am here because that is my job, that is what I have been doing for years and years. Does it mean I endorse any meeting I attend, or any Eritrean configuration that I see? Nope. Do I feel comfortable to talk about diversity in a very congregation that has no semblance of diversity? Not at all. If I did, I will betray the cause for which I struggle. When I see warts in our operations, I have to mention it. I do not feel comfortable as the only Muslim among the 21 assembled "speakers" or "panelists," among who are people I respect very much. And I have to emphasize, I object to tokenism even if I understand it is not for lack of good intentions.

I find it interesting that diversity is such an issue in technology companies. According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, the estimated size of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workforce is expected to increase by 18% in the next ten years, (non-STEM increasing by 12%), reaching to 8.7 million by 2018 alone. Forbes hypothesizes that if current hiring trends continue, STEM jobs will be "largely unavailable" to women and minorities, who combine to make up over half of the U.S. population (Newlands, 2016).

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Diversity as “the condition of having or being composed of different elements: especially the inclusion of different types of people in a group or organization (1). It is evident that diversity impacts every country worldwide, as there is not one country in the world that is not diverse. Although there will be the minorities and majorities of a country, whether a government likes it or not, each country is diverse in its own unique way. With this, we are able to analyze the problems of the past, deal with the current problems we face, and ultimately, we will be able to predict the issues diversity will cause in the near future.
