Diversity, Inequality, and Immigration Shanna Marie Fulwood HHS201 Angela Anderson February 11th, 2013 Diversity, inequality, and immigration or three words that brings mind some of the current political subjects that are currently affecting the United States today. Throughout the country’s history, there is the notable inequality and racial injustice in our society. This can be seen, and our history textbooks, about the Civil War, civil rights movement, and the more recently with the gay-rights movement. Most programs are targeted toward the poor income families, other than that there is no other discrimination problems. The current state of prejudice, discrimination, and oppression in the United States seems to be on a down word slide. Oppression really is not that big of an issue because of the fact, there are all kinds of opportunities out there for a better life regardless of race, sex, and mom, or history. The children seem to plague the US are prejudice and discrimination. This could be because, there are many phases to prejudice and discrimination, and over time, each one has become more sophisticated. This has evolved into prejudice and discrimination against stereotypes versus the actual community itself. To understand ethnicity one must know that the overall view of ethnicity has been shaped by the cultural definitions, media stereotypes, ethnic identity, institutional racism, and discrimination. Ethnicity is defined as ethnic qualities of affiliation and a particular ethnic affiliation or group ( Merriam-Webster.com). “Since humankind began forming groups, societies have created social constructs to perpetuates and maintain particular norms, customs, and traditions” ( Schmidt, 2006). People feel that Association with a particular group, usually of the same ethnic background, makes them feel more in place.
