Most of the time, when we listen to a song, we don’t listen to the words, or what message they are trying to give us. Each song out there has a message in the lyrics somewhere. For this assignment, we were to analyze a song and the lyrics and find the thesis of that song. With thesis, I mean what the message within the song is trying to tell us. The song “I hope you dance” by Lee Ann Womack has a good thesis in some ways, but the thesis could also be argumentative also.

Queen Lili`uokalani started her reign on January 29, 1891. In the beginning, a group called the Annexationists wanted to annex Hawaii to America. On July 4, 1894, Sanford Dole, who was apart of the Annexationist, declared himself president illegally. Lili`uokalani then was arrested for hidden weapons in her home and then on January 24, 1895. Queen Lili`uokalani officially gave up her throne on January 24,1895. The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom was unjustified because Queen Lili’oukalani was illegally overthrown and the Annexationist illegally created a government in Hawaii.

Every song can make one feel the emotion of the song. Depending on the song whether it is “Before He Cheats” or “Just A Dream” will show different emotions. In the song “Before He Cheats,” “I took a Louisville Slugger to both headlights, a hole in all 4 tires… Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats.” This emotion you can say is anger, she is also heartbroken but past the crying and sad part of it but to the point of anger and hatred. This song can really get you pumped up and hating all the cheaters in the world. The main purpose of Beyoncé’s songs is to emphasise feminism and invigorate gender equality through her lyrics. She does so by using by conveying feminist philosophy in her lyrics. In Run the World, Beyoncé sings “strong enough to bear the children, then get back to business.” Figurative language is used to express be that women give birth however then after they proceed to work. This metaphor shows the realization and empowerment that oneself can give in a depressing situation. This simile “Falling like ashes to the ground, Hoping my feelings they would drown” compares his feeling of sadness and depression to ashes, and wanting them to drown and vanish, from his life. This line, “All the hate that you’ve heard has turned your spirit to a dove” explains how all of the hate that he has experienced and gone through has turned his feelings around, and decided to look on the bright side of things. Music is a huge part of our entertainment, the songs we listen to and the sounds we hear all contribute to our personality, feelings and emotions. Some songs bring the happiness out of us and some songs make us sad. Humans have a very broad range of emotions; therefore songs need to be made to fit all of those feelings. Death is a subject common amongst most singers. We all experience death somehow, whether it is a death of a friend or family member. Music can certainly shape our attitudes and personalities. The second song I analyzed was “Paradise” by Coldplay. Similarly to “Kids”, the song “Paradise” starts with the idea of childhood. “When she was just a girl she expected the world. But it flew away from her reach so she ran away in her sleep and dreamed of paradise” is the opening verse for this tune. It talks of a young girl with big dreams expecting the world. As the girl in the song grows up she finds that life is not as simple as she believed. “Life goes on, it gets so heavy. The wheel breaks the butterfly. Every tear a waterfall. In the night the stormy night she'll close her eyes.” Those lyrics are a good example of how life has some downs, tears, and storms, but it talks of how the girl stays positive when the song says, “She’d say, ‘I know the sun must set to rise.’” I think this song is a good reflection of me. I have big dreams for myself, but as life goes on I go through some bumps in the road. I have encountered many of my own stormy nights, but I know the sun will rise to a clearer and brighter day in time. I have learned not to expect things to be handed to me, but to chase after my dreams, and my own perfect paradise to a path of success.
