Does Rap Music Cause Appropriate Behavior?

With the main focus of my first music comparison essay being on the country signer Taylor Swift and the rap artist Eminem, id like to try to compare the two different genres of music instead of comparing and contrasting two other artists. I will attempt this by explaining the similarities and differences of the music genre Rap, and the music genre Country by examining the elements of music for each genre. Along with the elements of music, ill also examine why country music has a fan base that is much older while most of the Rap listeners are todays youth. To start off, Rap music has always had the views of being a very rebellious type of music that doesn’t always portray the best image. In society today, it is highly noticed that the role of rap music messages and video images of violence causes an increase in negative emotions, thoughts and behaviors which could lead to violence amongst youth. Rap music has been at the center of concern in regards to the potential harmful effect of violent media on social behavior amongst youth. This potential behavior could be seen in the music video titled “Kim” by Eminem. In this music video, the storyline, language and sound encourages hostile thoughts and feelings amongst its audience. In the music video, Kim husband catches her cheating on him in their home with another man, while he is away. However, when Marshall gets home and finds out that his wife is cheating on him, he gets upset, angry, and abusive and becomes violent towards his wife Kim. He screams at her saying that, if she moves again, he will “beat the shit out of her” (Line 11). Violence in rap music has increased in response to the complex interplay of changing social conditions such as the elevated levels of youth violence in the changing commercial practices within the music industry. Hence, the media influences violence in four negative ways, which contributes immensely to anger amongst youth which leads to aggressive behavior such as social violence, substance abuse, domestic violence, and negative perceptions of women.

     Most rap songs that contain violence reflects incidents that occur in today’s society such as the Rodney King incident. “Rap music brings together a tangle of some of the most complex social, cultural, and political issues in contemporary American society.” Rap and hip-hop artists write songs that promote the killing of enemies as well as targeting institutions such as the church, government, and justice system (Ro 145) Most artists relive their own painful experiences over and over again though their music, delaying their own society’s process of recovery . for example, in 1989

Violence in music does not have a strong enough impact on children and teens to create acts of violence within society itself. Media violence alone has not been proven to create violence within children, however, it has been an influence in their lives that may result in violent acts because of the amount of influence their surroundings have affected children’s behavior (Richardson and scott 1). Music alone cannot result in violence, but in addition to living in the ghetto, abusive parents, or watching violent or sexually related videos then violence could occur if the child is brought up in that way. The listener would need to have the mindset of violent behavior to create a criminal act with the help of years surrounded by a violent environment. Rap is viewed as a social movement and a voice for empowerment that reaches young people in ways other music cannot.
