1. Would this be considered cruel and unusual punishment in the United States? Why? Yes, this would certainly be considered cruel and unusual punishment. It wasn’t that long ago a man could beat his wife, she was his property. We had slaves and they could be treated as the master pleased. Our laws now protect each of us, whether the color, age, sex, or religion. We have come a long ways and it’s difficult to accept that everyone doesn’t see things the way we do. 2. What place does religion have in punishment? Give examples. Does religion play a role in our justice system? How? I believe, religion has played a part in justice and punishment, in some way, in every country, including ours. No matter, what your religion, you have probably heard these quotes, “Vengeance, is mine sayeth the Lord,” or “do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Some countries continue the same punishments as quoted in the bible, “eye for an eye”, by cutting off the hand that steals. 3. Should we promote universal (global) ethical standards and human rights? Why? How do we address all of the issues that will arise regarding religion and culture? What universal ethical rules (human rights) should apply to mankind? Name two.
