Does religion determine the way that laws are made in society today and in the past? According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, religion is an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods. The definition of law is the system of rules that a particular country or community recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and may enforce by the imposition of penalties. Religious beliefs and colonial laws do intermingle in the book The Scarlet Letter; however, religious beliefs and colonial laws do not intermingle in Modern American society.

Laws today are more based off what is best for the people. Laws are not based off of religion because of the first amendment According to Cornell University Law School “The First Amendment guarantees freedoms concerning religion, expression, assembly, and the right to petition. It forbids Congress from both promoting one religion over others and also restricting an individual’s religious practices. It guarantees freedom of expression by prohibiting Congress from restricting the press or the rights of individuals to speak freely. It also guarantees the right of citizens to assemble peaceably and to petition their government.” To sum up, this is saying that a law cannot be against any religion. Although a few of the amendments are based off of a religion they are not harming any other religion. If the government today chose to make a law for one person’s religious belief it would be against another person’s religious beliefs. Therefore, law makers today do not base laws off of religious beliefs, and they do not intermingle in Modern
