Abusing or killing another living creature is one of the worst crimes imaginable. We each have the will to choose our own actions. However, some individuals choose to hurt or kill animals who cannot defend themselves. There is a terrible sport in America that has grown over the decades called dog fighting. This cruel endeavor needs to be stopped before more innocent dogs are brutally murdered.

Dog fighting is a sport that puts two dogs into a ring or pit to fight until one cannot continue or dies ["Animal Fighting Case Study: Michael Vick."]. Spectators bet money on the outcome of the fight. Owners of the dogs use cruel conditioning to create dogs that will be vicious in the ring and win, making the owners and the gamblers money. “All fighting dogs are conditioned from a very early age to develop what dog-fighters refer to as gameness [Detailed Discussion of Dog Fighting].” The training methods depend on the how experienced the dog-fighter is. Commonly used training equipment consists of treadmills, catmill/jenny, springpole/jumppole, flirt pole, chains, weights, bait and drugs/vitamins/supplements. In order for a dog to be deemed ready for fighting the dogs must pass a series of stages. This starts with “rolls” or “bumps”; which is when two dogs are provoked to lunge at each other without touching. Their “gameness” is tested by how well they fight against stronger dogs, once they pass they are ready to fight. Over the centuries dog fighting was outlawed in many countries but this insidious sport continues to survive and the abuse is still impacting communities today. Dog fighting in America did not become illegal in many states until the 1860s. However, dog fighting continued publicly well into the 1940s, until finally being driven underground due to public outrage and the withdrawal of the United Kennel Clubs endorsement. In 1976, dog fighting was outlawed in all U.S. states but law enforcement did not enforce the laws until decades later [Detailed Discussion of Dog Fighting].
