Abusing or killing another living creature is one of the worst crimes imaginable. We each have the will to choose our own actions. However, some individuals choose to hurt or kill animals who cannot defend themselves. There is a terrible sport in America that has grown over the decades called dog fighting. This cruel endeavor needs to be stopped before more innocent dogs are brutally murdered.

“All fighting dogs are conditioned from a very early age to develop what dog-fighters refer to as gameness [Detailed Discussion of Dog Fighting].” The training methods depend on the how experienced the dog-fighter is. Commonly used training equipment consists of treadmills, catmill/jenny, springpole/jumppole, flirt pole, chains, weights, bait and drugs/vitamins/supplements. In order for a dog to be deemed ready for fighting the dogs must pass a series of stages. This starts with “rolls” or “bumps”; which is when two dogs are provoked to lunge at each other without touching. Their “gameness” is tested by how well they fight against stronger dogs, once they pass they are ready to fight. The dogs who don’t win fights or do not have a vicious nature are deposed of by their heartless owners. The animals are of no use to the owners if they cannot generate money. Many dogs are murdered and bodies thrown in the woods or …show more content…

Dog fighting needs to have a harsher punishment because it allows dogs to be trained in horrible circumstances, many dogs end up badly injured, and it organizes an illegal underground betting ring
Although men and women would gamble frequently, they would also play a game known as Bear and Bull baiting. In Elizabethan England, nearly every town has had a baiting ring. Even Queen Elizabeth spent her afternoons watching fights for entertainment. Bulldogs were trained to attack chained bulls, they stayed bated for an hour while the dogs were able to attack them, they would be tied up and would not be able to fight back. The people would make a hole to put the bull in and tie them up so they could be tortured while the Bulldogs would attack. Before the fight began, they would put pepper in the bull’s nose to infuriate them. In that time Bulldogs were only bred for this sport. Dog fights have been going on ever since and it eventually became
Dogs are hung, beaten, or electrocuted to death for the pleasure of the watchers. Dogfights usually take from 1-2 hours and it ends when a dog is seriously injured or killed. Yes I know this isn’t something new, but this is a pretty big thing, pretty much everywhere in the world. Around that time the Staffordshire Bull terrier was developed and modern dog-fighting was born. The dog was brought to America in 1817 and dog fighting became part of American culture. The “sport” was endorsed by the United Kennel Club, which actually formulated rules and sanctioned referees. Although dog fighting had become illegal in most states by the 1860’s, it continued to flourish as an American pastime through the early twentieth century. It was so popular in fact that in 1881 the Ohio and Mississippi railroads advertised special fares to a dog-fight in Louisville between Lloyd’s Pilot, owned by ‘Cockney Charlie' Lloyd and Crib, owned by Louis Krieger.Public forums such as Kit Burns’ Tavern, “The Sportsman’s Hall” at 273 Water Street
Once the dogs prove to be ready, they are placed in the pit against larger dogs to test their willingness or determination to face collapse and future defeat. If the dogs pass the test, they are deemed ready to fight. When this happens, they are brought into the arenas after being washed, to make sure they have nothing on their coats that will harm the other dogs. A pitch usually consisting of plywood walls, about twenty feet in diameter with carpet, is where the fight will take place. Inside of the pit there will be an indication of lines, usually marked by masking tape or paint. The animals are brougt to the pitch by their owners. Inside the arena there will be one referee and the two owners of the dogs. On command, the dogs will be released, they smash together like a couple of mac trucks. They look like a wrestling match with teeth, biting one another, trying not to let go of their opponet. The matches can last up to forty-five minutes and end when one dog can no longer fight back because of exhaustion or death.
First the idea of dog fighting is wrong in the first place but Coren puts it into more detail on what really goes on inside of these dog fights. People bet on these dogs lives making them fight until one dies and if the both dogs live the owner of the losing dog has the choice to kill it and dogs do not deserve this type of treatment. A man’s best friend is fighting for its own life in a place where it has no choice but to fight and they did nothing to deserve any of it. In the article it explains how although dog fighting is illegal in many countries people still find ways to hold these events around the world and some countries even consider it
For animal lovers, it is difficult to understand why someone would cause a dog to engage in vicious fights, inflicting and receiving injuries or often death. Dogfighting is a serious and continuing problem all over the United States. A dogfight takes place in a ring made of plywood and is usually held in a hidden location such as a vacant garage or the basement of a house or business. Fights can last for hours, and the dogs are made to keep going even after having painful injuries such as torn flesh and broken bones. The fight goes on until one of the dogs is unable to continue. Dogs may die immediately of their injuries, sheer exhaustion or later from infections. Dog fighting should be stopped everywhere.
Dog fighting leaves many dogs being taunted and staved to encourage aggressive instincts. Dogs are forced to tread water in pools for a long time, they are also left to run on a treadmill while a caged animal is dangled in front of them. They are injected with steroids and their teeth are sharpened. Many have their ears cut off so the other dog cannot latch on, and chemicals are added to their food so their fur tastes bad to other dogs.
Dog fighting is an insidious underground organized crime that, although completely outlawed, has reached epidemic proportions in the United States. This disgusting ‘sport’ involves the actual pitting of two dogs against each other in a ring to fight for the entertainment of the spectators. The dogs, usually pitbulls, literally bite and rip the flesh off of one another while the onlookers cheer, scream, and place bets on which dog will win the match. After the fight, both dogs are left critically wounded. Generally, the loser of a match dies or is killed, unless he has any salvage value to his owner. But all in all, dogfighting is pure, unadulterated animal abuse. Why would people even partake in it, and what are the effects on the dogs and the communities which surround them?
Dog fighting isn’t just injuring dogs. Majority of the time the dogs get killed. These kind of dogs get no love at all. They are scared so when they are killed or just abandoned they don’t know how to react besides being in defense mode or crying or being scared.
Dog fights usually last until one dog wins, or in other words; the other dies. Fights can easily last an hour, and if you go to watch, you’ll find a pile of corpses in a pit full of blood. Those lifeless bodies that were minuets ago being attacked by another dog, for the entertainment purposes of the crowd. No sympathy is given by the bitter people that toss the remains of the killed dogs into a pile and hose down

The form of dog fighting I am most familiar with is urban dogfighting which is rampant in Memphis. According to unleashed there are three types. Off the chain is novice dogfighting. It's more like people who just have the dogs to make them look cool and think it makes them look tough to fight them. The second level harding calls hobbyist is closest to my knowledge of dogfighting. It's usually related to gangs and is more sophisticated and organized than impromptu off the chain fighting because there is more money involved. Where novices usually fight in parks hobbyists usually have makeshift pits and networks to organize secret meetings. The third tier is professional .This is where the most money is involved so it is naturally the most organized. Its is also less urbanized. The dogs are worth more in the upper levels. This is also where you see the most professional organization
