One of my future careers I hope to have is being a K-9 unit dog trainer/Handler. A reason I want to be a K-9 unit trainer is I want to help people and I really like dogs so I feel as if it’s a perfect place for me. But there is one thing I have to do before I am able to become a k-9 unit handler/trainer I have to start off as a police officer and work my way up. Some more reasons I would like to be a k-9 unit trainer/Handler are: it pushes me to work for something, and I believe that I am capable of training big dogs. Some job responsibilities are discovering drugs, explosives, chemicals and other illegal substances, and find and rescue along with locating evidence .My environment would be a bunch of dogs and a training course, as far …show more content…

Although, before a dog can begin training it must be tested to ensure it has the right temperament for the job and can easily adapt to different environments. The most essential characteristic of a good K9 dog is its defense drive, as well as its instinct to chase and apprehend prey. Dogs must also pass an extensive physical by a veterinarian. Most K9 handlers use their dogs to locate fleeing criminal suspects, search for human remains, and seek out illegal substances. Canine officers should be quick thinking, able to work as part of a team. Some departments require less than 800 hours of training, but quite a few require more. For example, the Sacramento Police Academy is a 24-week program that includes 933 hours of training which already says this job requires a lot of work. But I am willing to take on the long difficult task of training and handling a K-9 unit dog I know that I will have my k-9 unit partner In my custody and in my home. Although there is the risk of a police dog injures someone or causes damage, the police department could be liable for those

As you can tell I'm a career lawman and will continue till my last breath to serve the beautiful city of Los Santos. I'd like to take a moment to also thank the previous commander, Roman Stakic, for nominating me as the new Canine Services Commander. I will do him, the department, and the fine city of Los Santos proud and continue his legacy through the Canine Service. I'd also like to address that the Canine Services Unit will
The purpose of law enforcement is to protect the lives and property of both the community’s citizens and people who visit and work in the community. There are many different levels of law enforcement careers such as local, state and federal agencies. There are also many different occupations within the law enforcement field. One of those occupations is a police officer. (10 Things You Need to Consider Before Becoming a Police Officer, Criminology Careers.com, August 2012, Timothy Roufa, Criminology Careers Expert). After submitting an application, each candidate must go through a written test, a physical agility test, an oral interview or two, a “background” check of nearly every aspect of his life, including driving records, drug or alcohol usage, a thorough medical and psychological exam, and a polygraph test. Then after that, each candidate must go through an exhausting physical and mental challenge known as the Police Academy. If the candidates make it through the Police Academy then they advance to on-the-job training known as Field Training, which is even more difficult than the Police Academy. After all of this training and becoming a police officer, one would have to ask themselves if the job is worth it. Police officers are put into dangerous situations daily. Man’s best friend: you would think that that title would conjure up images of humans, or even our closest cousins in the animal kingdom, such as monkeys, apes, and chimpanzees. However, the first image that enters most humans head is the same image that would have induced fear hundreds of years ago, the not so distant heir to the wolf: dogs. The same creatures that we feuded with for survival now take up a huge part of our lives and make up a large portion of the images littering the internet. Dogs take part in everything from movies to family gatherings, to search and rescue and emotional or physical service.
