Since the article explains that in most cases the offender will go back to the victim with the victim's consent and the same situation will occur again and eventually lead to death. The last part of the article talks about the gun rights of offenders, which is little to none. I believe that the article “Beat Your Wife and Lose Your Gun” is one of the most reliable sources because this article is very up to date and provides a lot of detail about domestic violence and gun rights, which makes it a great source for my paper. The research is both biased and objective because this article only focuses on women involved in domestic violence situations; instead of some situations when the man is the victim, but other than that this article is objective in the fact that it states the laws and steps that Louisiana is trying to take in order to lower the percentage of domestic violence crimes. The facts in this article are very well represented since the article provides many different percentages dealing with domestic violence that were very eye
More gun control laws are needed to protect women from domestic abusers. The big problems of domestic violence are the guns. “But many people don’t know that most mass shootings come from domestic violence in homes. In at least 54 percent of mass shootings (85), the perpetrator shot a current or former intimate partner or family member.” (Sanger-Katz).The domestic abuse is usually on the husband’s side, where they
Domestic abuse in the United States is a large-scale and complex social and health problem. The home is the most violent setting in America today (Lay, 1994). Sadly enough, the majority of people who are murdered are not likely killed by a stranger during a hold-up or similar crime but are killed by someone they know. Not surprisingly, the Center for Disease Control and prevention has identified interpersonal violence as a major public health problem (Velson-Friedrich, 1994). Current estimates suggest that three to four million women are the victims of physical abuse by their intimate partners (Harris & Cook, 1994). According to the FBI, some form of domestic violence occurs in half of the homes in the United States at least once a
Every action is followed by a reaction; however, occasionally the reaction is only a temporary solution that leads to long-term consequences. This is especially true of how domestic violence is currently governed by the criminal justice system and social norms. A lack of preventative care exists and this ignores the consequences of domestic violence in our society. Incidents of domestic violence are often treated as one-time or isolated occurrences; however, in many cases abusers and victims fall back into these learnt behaviors. Therefore, domestic violence is a never-ending cycle that cannot be stopped without cultural and legal changes that focus on preventing further instances of violence and empowering victims to break the cycle.
There are many theories out there that try to explain why domestic violence happens. Some like family violence theory say that it is passed down through the family because basically what you see is what you will do. Others say it’s a chemical imbalance or its based on other things. I believe that it is a little bit of all of the theories but the Culture of Violence Theory is playing a huge role today in helping shape our young children’s minds as to what is now acceptable. During this assignment we will look at four different types of examples of how the Culture of Violence Theory is doing just that.
"Firearms and domestic violence are a lethal combination - injuring and killing women, children, and bystanders every day in the United States."(Formerly Family Violence Prevention). But, sadly the one group that is often the victim is women. "For homicides in which the murder weapon could be identified, 52 percent of victims were shot and killed with a gun."(SugerMann). Domestic Abusers in some states, are able to obtain a gun as gun rights overrides protection. This was the case for Stephanie Holton from Washington State who had requested protection from ex-husband, who had threaten to shot her in the mouth if her boyfriend was near their kids. The Judge does issue a restraining order, but within 12 hours, Mr. Holton armed with a assault rifle threatened to kill her right as he stood in front of her house. Sacred, Ms. Holton called 9-1-1 and the dispatcher quickly directed officers to her house and was fortunately able to apprehend Mr. Holton. This violent episode is something that is happening everywhere. But, some people argue that gun violence happens in places that are disenfranchised, such as the inner cities. But this can be refuted because as of 2013, gun violence increased so did gun ownership. Gun Violence needs to be solved with more regulation as it will be harder for someone to obtain a
This online news article discusses the bi partisan movement for firearm laws against domestic abusers. It also points towards the fact that many more women are shot and killed by their abusers. This article is very useful in showing that everyone across party lines agrees that people who have proven that they are at a higher risk to perpetrate gun violence should have the right to have a gun taken away from them. This article is very relevant to this discussion because it was published very recently. The public interest is to provide protection to victims and the movement of laws aimed at domestic abusers will help protect many lives. Those protected also includes random members of the public that may unfortunately cross paths with someone on a rampage.
More gun control laws are needed to protect women from domestic abusers and stalkers. Five women are killed with firearms consistently in the United States. A lady 's danger of being killed increments 500% if a weapon is available amid a local question. Amid the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, 5,364 US warriors were murdered in real life between Oct. 7, 2001 and Jan. 28, 2015; somewhere around 2001 and 2012 6,410 ladies were slaughtered with a firearm by a close accomplice in the United States. A 2003 investigation of 23 crowded high-pay nations found that 86% of ladies killed by guns were in the United States and American ladies are 11.4 times more inclined to be the casualties of firearm crimes 57% of mass shootings included aggressive behavior at home. For instance, the 2011 mass shooting at a Seal Beach, CA hair salon supposedly started in view of the shooter 's guardianship fight with his ex who was a hairdresser at the salon. 31 states don 't forbid indicted offense stalkers from owning weapons and 41 states don 't compel sentenced local abusers from surrendering firearms they as of now own.76% of ladies killed and 85% of ladies who survived a murder endeavor by a private accomplice were stalked in the year prior to the murder or murder endeavor.

Unfortunately, there are many all over this country that are victims of domestic abuse that result in gun violence by their abuser. Fortunately, some women do survive this horror propelling them to become advocates to strengthen gun control laws in America. Statistics gathered by Every Town Research in 2016, states that women in domestic abuse relationships are 10 times more likely to become victims of gun violence, comparing to victims of armed robberies. Similarly, women are at risk of gun violence. Statistics show that “a woman’s risk of being murdered increases 500% if a gun is present during a domestic dispute”. This means that there is a high likelihood that the woman will be shot when the couple is having a quarrel. One example was a case in 2011 at Seal Beach, California. It was a mass shooting that started when the culprit went on a “rampage after losing a custody battle over his son”. Also, a gun would be a common cause of murder in domestic abuse. For example, a study reported that, “over the past 25 years, more intimate partner
Domestic Violence is a world-wide problem but in America it is amplified with the ready availability of guns as in this article regarding Dr. Albert Lambert of Florida. Dr. Albert Lambert purchased a gun October 6, 2013 and a gun cleaning kit for a 22 caliber ten (10) days prior to the murder of Kimberly Lindsey (WPBF.com). This brutal act of domestic violence leaves three children without a mother and subsequently a father. This incident has flooded the radio, newspapers, television and internet since the ordeal started in West Palm Beach, Florida on October 27, 2013 and ended on November 4, 2013 in Miami as Sheriff’s deputies discovered Lambert’s sister and boyfriend removing Lambert’s corpse from her sisters Miami home upon their
There are many different types of domestic violence. Physical abuse is the most obvious form, but this is not to say that outsiders always recognize it. Generally, physical violence causes bodily harm, using a variety of methods. Slapping, pushing, throwing, hitting, punching, and strangling are only a few methods. An object or weapon may or may not be used. There is not always physical evidence of physical abuse such as bruising, bleeding, scratches, bumps, etc., therefore, absence of physical marks does not necessarily mean physical abuse had not occurred. Physical abuse sometimes escalates to murder (Morris and Biehl 7, Haley 14-17).
