Abstract
Domestic violence is a social issue that is affected by many women worldwide. Domestic violence against females occurs globally amongst culture, religion, and ethnicity. Domestic violence is one of the most unreported crimes due to fear, helplessness, and shame. There are many stressors that causes a person causes a person to be become cruel to their partners or show them a different side of them. These stressors includes: financial stress, jealousy, or needing control. The World Health Organization reports that the proportion of women who had ever experienced physical or sexual violence or both by an intimate partner ranged from 15% to 71%, the majority between 29% and 62% (WHO, 2002). Domestic violence is a serious problem for women and families all over the world. Domestic violence doesn’t discriminate regards of class, age, or race. Additionally, it has been found that children who see and or experience domestic violence in their home settings are more likely to be involved in an abusive and violent relationship later on in life. Thus, this cycle of violence will continue, making it difficult to escape. Domestic violence statistics continues to increase around the globe. A recent event that was published in the newspapers surrounded a football player, Ray Rice who was suspended indefinitely by the NFL due to his recent domestic violence crime towards his fiancée’. In many of the low socio- economic communities, they are at the highest rate of underreporting of domestic violence (Bradley, F., etl 2002). In the United States the highest rate of domestic abuse are found in Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Cuban communities (Fact Sheet, 2012). One in five of the Latina women suffer from IPV to include 34% suffering from domestic violence in their home. Of these 34% of these women reported that they experienced domestic violence from their partner since moving to the US. Unfortunately, there are many factors that contribute to the domestic violence that these women experience from their partners to include lack of family, communication factors, and lack of education. Domestic violence is not always reported by victims due to their lack of knowledge about the laws. Many countries do not have laws that are put in place for the protection of these women; however laws that are put in place for these victims are not enough to enforce the protection, if these victims decide to report the abuse.
