On 03/18/2017 at approximately 2132 hours, I was dispatched to 8340 Rd. 46 in the County of Montezuma, and State of Colorado for reports of a domestic disturbance.

Furthermore, in past years, there were rules that permitted a husband to beat his wife, “As long as the instrument he used had a circumference that was smaller than the circumference of his thumb.” (Davies, 2008 pg. 134). Back in the day, the killing of a wife was not seen as a crime. In many areas, if a man or woman discovered infidelity, and killed their spouses in result, was viewed as acceptable. Intimate partner violence is treated differently from state to state. The criminal justice system overall has made improvements when dealing with intimate partner violence over the last 15 years. Many states have implemented laws dealing with domestic abuse, which include: anti-stalking laws in every state, and spousal exemption laws in rape cases. Additionally, every law enforcement personnel have to make an arrest without a warrant for domestic violence cases and penalties are being enforced in violation of court orders.

Domestic abuse is a very serious offense, and it needs to be stopped. It is not only a legal offense, but it is a humane offense. Abuse is wrong and lead to very serious consequences for the abuser and the abusee. Relationships are very important and are a wonderful part of life, but they can crumble when tension and strain are not properly taken care of. This can lead to abuse, and once abuse starts it can be difficult to stop. This is why prevention needs to be improved and strengthened. In order to strengthen domestic abuse prevention there needs to be more focus on counseling, classes, and programs.

Domestic violence is an act which one individual purposely harms another, usually someone they are close with, in order to please themselves or to get what they want out of it. Many American’s do not believe that domestic violence is a that big of an issue because many don’t hear or see it daily. The terrifying fact is that on average, one out of four women are domestically abused by their spouse. According to the New Choices, Inc. there are twenty-three warning signs that people are involved in a domestic relationship (Early Warning Signs of Domestic Violence). The majority of the signs including having the spouse being controlling and having to be in power. They are always having to know where the spouse is and if they think about leaving, that individual will either threaten them or threaten to harm themselves in order to make that person stay in the unhealthy relationship. The abuser is generally obsessed with power and control. Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner through physical and emotional abuse. Women are much more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence with 85 percent of domestic abuse victims being women and 15 percent being men. Domestic Violence is one of the biggest issue in today’s society with all ages. Domestic violence, also known as domestic abuse, spousal abuse, battering, family violence, dating abuse, and intimate partner violence (IPV), is a pattern of behavior which involves the abuse by one partner against another in an intimate relationship such as marriage, cohabitation, dating or within the family. It is experienced by women and men in heterosexual and same-sex relationships. Domestic violence does not have to always be from a man, but a woman could be just as violent as a man. Domestic violence could also come from a past experience, or something that was witnessed as a child. A lot of men, who abuse their spouse or child, have experienced it through a dad or step dad and it was done to their mom or a woman figure in their family. I have never experienced domestic violence but I know a few people who are living witnesses of domestic violence. I would not wish this on anyone that I know. Noticing and acknowledging the sign of an abusive relationship is the first step to ending it. When you begin to notice the signs, it is best to bring this to someone.

Domestic Violence is a global issue reaching across national boundaries as well as socio-economic, cultural, racial and class distinctions (Kaur & Garg 2008). Domestic violence has had a widespread, international effect on intimate relationships with both men and women acting as aggressors and victims. Though domestic violence is an international issue, with many women being affected in non-Western and developing countries, much of the research and literature has focused on Western countries. However, as this is such an international problem, it is essential to draw research from areas affected by rampant domestic violence all over the world. It is also essential to study and document the occurrence of domestic violence against every age, as it can start among couples in their early teens all the way to elderly couples. This paper reflects on four peer-reviewed articles concerning factors and circumstances that often lead to higher incidences of domestic violence as well as ways to combat this issue. Through studying various peer-reviewed articles concerning domestic violence, many issues were identified that seemed to be associated with increased levels of domestic violence. For instance, male dominance and female dependence often correlated with a higher level of domestic violence. It is imperative that access to education, as well as greater awareness to the issue of domestic violence, be increased throughout the world in order to prevent and diminish the occurrence of domestic violence. It is also important to begin teaching children about domestic violence and how to avoid engaging in and be able to leave violent
