How Does Domestic Violence Affect Our Society

Domestic violence is a single act or a pattern of cruel acts in any relationship that a partner uses to get or keep power and control over another partner. The violence can be sexual, physical, economic, emotional, or psychological actions or threats of actions that impacts another person. Any actions that manipulate, intimidate, isolate, humiliate, terrorize, frighten, threaten, coerce, hurt, blame, wound, or injure someone can be domestic violence (The United States Department of Justice).

Domestic violence affects a large amount of relationships in the United States each year. As the times have changed, abuse has become less accepted as a normal occurrence, and society has begun working together to provide awareness towards violence in intimate partner relationships. “Problems of family violence are potentially the most destructive in our society” (Kurland 23). Domestic violence is a problem that begins in the home, and spreads to affect the world around it. Violence is present in relationships of all demographics, be it race, sexual orientation, or social class. No one is entirely safe from experiencing abuse, but if society is taught to recognize the signs it can save a life or even prevent abuse from happening.

Many American’s do not believe that domestic violence is a that big of an issue because many don’t hear or see it daily. The terrifying fact is that on average, one out of four women are domestically abused by their spouse. According to the New Choices, Inc. there are twenty-three warning signs that people are involved in a domestic relationship (Early Warning Signs of Domestic Violence). The majority of the signs including having the spouse being controlling and having to be in power. They are always having to know where the spouse is and if they think about leaving, that individual will either threaten them or threaten to harm themselves in order to make that person stay in the unhealthy relationship. The abuser is generally obsessed with power and control. If they do not feel like they are in control of their spouse or have a higher power than them, they will use the act of domestic violence in order to put

Alas, not many women realize the harm they are living because they are blinded by fear their partner creates for them to live by each and every day. Historically, many relationships and marriages have gone through many years of Domestic abuse, but yet have not recognized the signs of an abusive relationship. From professional football players to celebrities that have committed domestic violence. Domestic violence is now a trending topic that is being heard throughout the country. Lawrence Sherman and Richard Berk conducted a domestic violence experiment in Minneapolis. In April of 1984 this experiment came out in the American Sociological Review, Volume 49, Issue 2.

Domestic violence is a matter between two intimate partners. It’s the action of sexually, emotionally or physically abusing one another. In these relationships, there is usually a lot of tension and emotion. I personally know someone who has experienced this process and its hard to watch happen; because you know that you cannot physically help them, without being hurt yourself. I hope that more punishments become more harsh and better help for the victims. I also believe that the abusers need help, it takes serious anger and hurt to intentionally want to hurt someone that you love.

The study of human culture provides us with a look into other cultures from an up-close and distinct perspective, which allows us to better understand their culture and way of life. Taking an objective look at another culture without being somewhat biased can be a difficult task. This being the case, we must examine culture by using emic and etic perspectives. An emic perspective is an insider views; observing the culture from within the culture itself. An etic perspective is an outsider’s view of a culture; evaluating the culture through the eyes of someone who is not part of the culture.

According to statistics found by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Every nine seconds a woman is abused by her husband or intimate partner. At least 1 in every 4 women and 1 in every 9 men have been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in their lifetime. Most often the abuser is one of their own family. Domestic violence is a problem that somehow affects every one of us in this room at some time and is actually the leading cause of injury to women -- more than car accidents, muggings and rapes combined.

The title of this feature film that I will be providing an analysis on is titled Enough. The production company is Columbia Pictures and this film was made in 2002. Enough was filmed in the United States of America and directed by Michael Apted. Director Michael Apted was born in England and he is best known for his films for The World Is Not Enough, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and the film this analysis will focus on entitled Enough.

It is known as the silent epidemic because so many victims, majority women, suffer in silence. According to statistics, 85% of domestic violence victims are women. Additionally, statistics show that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and that an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year (www.NCADV.org). In order to help individuals who are suffering from domestic violence, it is important to first understand the causes and effects of it.
