The Farmer’s Market that I chose to visit for this project was the Douglas Farmer’s Market in Douglas, Wyoming, which is my hometown. It is in Jackalope Square, a small area in downtown which serves as the town square. The market runs from the start of summer through the end of September in the small town. At a given time, there are approximately 50 to 75 people at the market. There are around 25 vendors at the market in a given week, most from the southeast area of Wyoming. There are many local vendors from Douglas and the surrounding area, as well as some from Orin, Torrington, and Lingle. A vendor, one that sells a variety of vegetables, is from Lingle, Wyoming and is at the market weekly. A vendor sells homemade jams and jellies, which is next to a vendor that makes savory and sweet breads. These two vendors are both from Douglas, and often assist each other in selling. There is an interesting generational learning curve. One of the vendors has two daughters that sell lemonade next to her vegetable stand, showing that the market is helping children learn entrepreneurship. The vendors and patrons have camaraderie, because a main theme of the market is that the local economy is being helped during the market, with all the proceeds staying local. The last piece of note, from this farmer’s market, is that there are many vendors who are willing to help the market goers learn to grow their own produce. On more than one occasion, I have watched a patron ask a vendor for advice on growing a certain vegetable, and the vendor has taken a significant amount of time giving help and sharing tips on how to grow the plant. I shop at this particular market regularly, and plan to do so in the future. I enjoy many different farmer’s markets, and this is one of my favorites. The atmosphere is inviting and amusing. The produce is always fresh and of good quality, and the vendors are sociable while
In the Shenandoah Valley near the border of Virginia, Joel Salatin and his son Daniel, accompanied by two farm hands, run “one of the most productive and influential alternative farms in America” (Pollan 126). Polyface farm is rather unique in its business tactics as well as agricultural practices. The only way to eat products from Polyface farm is to live next to it. . .or within a half-day’s drive. Joel Salatin is a firm believer of “relationship marketing” wherein the only way to ensure integrity is to meet the man who raised your meal (Pollan 240). Farms like Joel’s are often forgotten or considered to be at the bottom of the socioeconomic food chain, yet customers come back every single week to pick up the food that they know has

Every Sunday morning for the past 38 years, at exactly 8 am, the Encino farmer’s market, located on Victory Blvd. comes to life. The smell of freshly baked breads and pies wafts around the area and mixes with the scent of fresh fruits and berries, creating an aroma that brings along with it memories of large family dinners and a sense of community. It is a small farmer’s market, but it doesn’t lack the chaos one would always associate a farmer’s market with, as soon as the doors open, it fills to the brim with the hustle and bustle of elderly couples and families young and old, and vendors welcoming them to their stands with friendly hellos and recommendations of seasonal products that just came in stock. The shoppers all seem to be familiar, greeting each other as they exit their cars and waving to one another as they pass by, with

The Seacoast of New Hampshire and the surrounding regions are full of a vast amount of local food resources. In my town of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, people are making it their life’s work to spread awareness about the importance of locally grown food. The Seacoast Growers Association is one organization that has been holding farmers’ markets since the 1970s. Besides just working to make local food available on the seacoast, “…this Local Food Network also offers great educational and awareness building programs and promotes the importance of clean water, air and land to preserving not just our agricultural heritage, but also our future” (Seacoast Growers Association).
Also how the consumers interacted with the farmers. The guest list only went out to local mothers in the area.
1 Farmers may not totally understand the product value. They may not easily accept new product that they have never heard about.
The agricultural industry: the farms, plants, animals, and farmers, have supported this great country for so long, but lately we have turned our backs on it. Today, we live in a materialistic society, people wanting more and better items, not settling for products that will accomplish the same job. From looking at the fruits and vegetables in the grocery store, we see the bruised or smaller ones left, while the big and brightly colored ones are selected first. In our society today, changes are constantly being made to help expand and evolve the agricultural industry, but it has yet been able to do so. To this day farmers across this nation have not been completely successful in providing for the people who make up this country. In the stores
Local farmers markets give back to the community from the income that is made from selling produce which helps boost the community’s economy. “ Eating local means more for the local economy. “ ( Source A ) Purchasing local foods from the community are a spectacular way to provide for a community’s economy. “ According to a study by the New Economics Foundation in London a dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy. “ ( Source A ) Local food markets are better for the economy because the income would go to the community unlike a big chain supermarket where the income made in that establishment would go to a corporate office, none of the income would be put towards the
For my civic engagement-learning project, I choose to volunteer at the Unity Common Ground Fair. I have been to state fairs but not a fair like this one. Honestly, I never even heard of this fair until Mark Kavanaugh e-mailed all KVCC students about it. The Common Ground Fair hosts the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association (MOFGA) every year. Through Mark’s email, I contacted Anna Libby, Volunteer Coordinator, to find out what I needed to complete before I could volunteer. I did enjoy my time working at the fair, for I did interact with all versions of diversity.
The Market is built on the edge of a steep hill, and consists of several lower levels located below the main level. Each features a variety of unique shops such as antique dealers, comic book and collectible shops, small family-owned restaurants, and one of the oldest head shops in Seattle. The upper street level contains fishmongers, fresh produce stands and craft stalls operating in the covered arcades. Local farmers and craftspeople sell year-round in the arcades from tables they rent from the Market on a daily basis, in accordance with the Market's mission and founding goal: allowing
Former president George Washington once said, “Agriculture is the most healthful, most useful, and most noble employment of man,” (George Washington Quote). Since Washington’s presidency, countless advancements and developments within the agricultural industry have allowed the United States to grow, develop, and become one of the most prosperous countries in the entire world. Nevertheless, this prosperity is also marked by several key historical events, such as the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions, which have caused the core values and traditions that this great nation was built on to slowly disappear. Today, the majority of Americans have no knowledge, understanding, or appreciation for the agricultural industry, causing them to take for granted the basic necessities they rely on each day. This disconnection has created a gap between producers and consumers, which is known as
The commercial’s demographic seems to be adults between the late 20’s through the 50’s, and married. I believe the “hidden-fear” of cheating is a psychographic of the State Farm commercial, since the commercial is solely focused on proving that infidelity is wrong and should not be committed. Also the commercial tends to point out that women will find out anything they can if their significant other is sneaking around.
Grappling with the potential purchase of Olive Hill Farm, we decided to conduct a financial analysis to determine whether the project should be taken or not. Our financial analysis include scenarios for the best, worse, and most likely outcomes of purchasing the farm. For each scenario a Net Present Worth (NPW) and an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) was calculated and compared. This revealed that there was little gain for the worst case scenario and large gains for the other two scenarios. A sensitivity analysis and a break-even analysis was also conducted. The sensitivity analysis identified the most influential factors on the NPW. In the end, the analysis favored buying Olive Hill Farm because it would be a low risk, high reward investment.
