Halifax a city of innovation, ocean and community is one that has not been the same for the past 100 years. Downtown Halifax is one example of an area of the city that is always restoring and rebuilding to further the economy. There are many buildings that have been around since the eighteen-century along with new buildings that are being built with hopes of rejuvenation. Street corners are another aspect that can be analyzed to observe the changes in this city. The street corner that will be explored over the past 100 years is the intersection of Barrington and Prince Street. This corner will be analyzed through the use of Halifax archives and other historical websites to understand what the streets looked like to interpret how it felts …show more content…
This corner would have been home to some animals as well most likely mice and cats. Although these animals would not want to be seen on the road because of the horse and buggy’s that traveled along the streets (Nova Scotia Archives, 1900). The animals would not want to be caught in an interaction with the horses and the mice would not want to risk the chance of dying. This street corner was an early city street that part of a regular travelled path (Nova Scotia Archives, 1910). People would use this corner to get to church and other would use it to get to work (Nova Scotia Archives, 1910). Although after the Halifax Exploitation people traveling on this road would never see it the way they did before. There would have been people talking at this street corner about the man who was blasted through a window of the church that left an imprint of his silhouette (St. Paul’s Church, 1912). Many people who traveled this street corner would know fear that same thing happening to them and many might avoid this street corner with the thought of it being haunted. Although this may be the case there would still be inviting smells of the sprinklers watering the grass at the church during the summer (Nova Scotia Archives, 1914). At this street corner you would also see people walking to church on a Sunday morning or those staring at the clock on the top of Saint Paul’s realizing they are running late for there insurance appointment (Nova Scotia Archives,

The neighborhood seemed to be a nice area from how it looks now. Katrina had a very long walk that night to reach her destination. Unfortunately she would never make it back to her house the evening of Valentine’s Day. Instead she was brutally murdered and left to die in a field behind a bowling alley where now lies the Home Depot in Sayerville. Her body was found by people who were riding atv’s behind the bowling alley in a wooded area. Her skull was fractured as she suffered blunt force trauma which induced her death. The Home Depot was sincere enough to leave a space where a memorial lies for Katrina where her body was found. The memorial is a nice area where an engraved stone has Katrina’s information and the usual information a tombstone would read.
In Nightingale Square, a small run down ‘mom & pop’ grocery store, a newly updated/built Downtown Store. I noticed many vehicles parked on the streets and residents walking the streets.
South Street Philadelphia’s sidewalk’s safety is not determined by the strangers shuffling in and out of the area, but instead by the local residents and community members who live there. Based on my personal observations, the biggest asset to South Street in regard to safety and overall quality of the area are the locals who reside there. This idea of community investment relating to the safety of a street is presented in Jane Jacob’s novel The Death and Life of Great American Cities and is one of her ideas that is accurately displayed throughout South Street. By examining the various ways people interact in different areas and shops on South Street, I was able to evaluate what aspects of her writing proved to be beneficial to the overall safety of the area.
At this time in history, locally, there was an Indian Reserve in New Westminster in the area that is now Front Street that ran alongside the river named Qayqayt. In 1859 the residents of New Westminster decided they no longer wanted Indians in the city core, “so three reserves were created: the 32 acres near Scott Paper’s current location; the 27 acres on Poplar Island; and the 104 acres across the Fraser River in Brownsville, an Indian village called Qayqayt.” [cite] At the beginning of the 20th century, in 1904, a small pox epidemic swept through killing many Natives. This reduced the members of the Qayqayt from the already few “400 people to under 100. Many of the remaining inhabitants of Qayqayt were assimilated into other local reserves,
The St. Lawrence boulevard is full of history. Before becoming the large and impressive street it is nowadays, this boulevard was the only path upon which travelers could get in and out of Montreal. In fact, this unique street served as a pathway to link the North and the South shore of the island, and consequently, it was a vital contributor to the development of Montreal . Any cargo or people coming from Europe would enter the port and from there, take the St. Lawrence road in order to reach their new settlement. In 1717, the French colony built defensive walls around what we now call the Vieux-Montréal . These walls only had one
The city of Halifax provokes the tragic memories of the 1977 Halifax Explosion (Halifax History Facts and Timeline, 2016). However, Halifax is the provincial capital of Nova Scotia and it is famous for its magnificent Atlantic coast. Also, Halifax has undergone huge urban development and economic growth and is now recognized as one of the largest coastal cities in Canada regarding its historical, physical, economic and cultural diversities.(62)

2. The street in where we live is where the wealthy people live, so it’s not really crowded like in streets of the city. Besides, it’s actually distant from the city.. the noises and the poor. Basically a good place to refresh and rest your minds. To be honest, I’m not really close with our neighbours. They’re rich too and somehow, I always get the feeling they actually pretend to be nice to other people and have this evil back-up plan somewhere in their head. (Which I do not have of course!)
Even though Nova Scotia is very resplendent, We shouldn’t move there because we don’t know where we’re going to live, find a job, or where I will go to school. What’s the purport of dropping everything here and moving to Nova Scotia all of the sudden? Failing to plan is planning to fail. If you don’t have a plan then you’re setting yourself up for failure. You need to consider where I will get the education I need, how you will pay for all of the expenses, and where we will stay when we get to Nova Scotia.
This street symbolizes a stormless and pleasant street with nice people but, Miss Strangeworth is hiding a disturbing secret, a secret a person shouldn’t be proud about. But, Miss Strangeworth has an ostensible politeness while she is concealing the side of her that likes to criticize everybody's actions hurting their feelings.
Love Canal is one of the most iconic and appalling environmental tragedies in American history. Dreamed up by a visionary, William T. Love built Love Canal to create a dream community on the fringe of Niagara Falls where all could see it as a dream community. Love built the Canal because he thought that by digging a short canal between two rivers that he could generate electricity to power homes and business in the community surrounding the canal. With the invention of AC power and a depression, the canals power systems were never installed and it remained as a dry canal for quite some time. It’s ironic that it had such grand intentions considering the Love Canal would become one of Americas most polluted superfund sites in American history.
Cape Breton Boat Rentals is a boat rental company owned by Bruce MacLean and operated by his brother Malcolm Maclean. Although their reception was welcoming in the year 1988, their selling price could be said is at below the actually operating cost. To avoid the same situation in 1989, the MacLean bothers had to improvise and make aggressive decisions like for example tripling their advertisements. We will show possible ways and methods on how they would have improved in marketing concepts. We will go through the marketing characteristics, marketing mix and marketing concepts that were and should be applied. We feel Malcolm MacLean is stealing money from the business.
The corner was now just a normal street corner State Street and Main Street It was the same as all
Many downtowns first emerged as a distinctive place due to elite residents with homes in the area, which served as meeting places for important business transactions. By the late 19th century downtowns had typically been laid out with designated business blocks (Ford 2003). The growth of the business block as an economic center and booming downtown forced out any competition that were not appropriate with “high rents, social pressure and architectural change” (Ford 2003, pp 45). This was the origin of the spatial structure and land use patterns that are associated with contemporary downtowns. The origin of the town structure is most commonly affiliated with European cities as models of spatial layout. Specialty business and retail districts that characterized American downtowns and what we now image a good downtown to be are directly linked to it European counterpart. The key characteristic that defer from the European model was the tendency for American cities to be street-oriented rather then place-oriented. This contributed to the more linear structure of the city, business pursued locations on the “main street” rather then near major plazas or religious buildings (Robertson 1997).
