The History of Basketball Basketball, one of the greatest sports ever created, has developed over time leaving a mark in society and culture. It was created just over 120 years ago and has become a major influence in all of society. Today, it can be found all around the world and can be played with a simple "ball" and a basket. The enjoyable game can be approached in a number of great ways to play, whether it be with a team or just alone. The culture of basketball has a huge influence on the youth giving them many role models to look up to. James A. Naismith, the man who started it all, was the inventor of basketball. Dr. Naismith was a Canadian man who taught a physical education class at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts. On December 1, 1891 at the recreation facility, the school asked Naismith to find a way to occupy his class of 18 outside due to short gym space (Donald). He made do with his available recourses and decided to place two peach bushel baskets 10 feet high on iron poles as goals to throw the soccer ball into. The teams of 9 played the game for quite a while, running and shooting until the game ended with a final shot made by William R. Chase, making the only basket during the entire contest (Donald).
