Exploration into the unknown can definitely have its negative effects on the explorer as was discovered by poor Dr. Jekyll. A man who devoted himself to the study of transcendental science soon became a hostage and then a victim of his own passion. His interest in his discovery was his initial reason to continue to explore with more experiments. This interest, however, soon turned into greed which is what Dr. Jekyll explains as the “pure evil”. As this greed began to overwhelm Dr. Jekyll, so did the evil begin to take control of him. Robert Louis Stevenson shows off the difference between interest and obsession in The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by explaining how Dr. Jekyll who could transform into Mr. Hyde eventually turned into Mr. Hyde who could transform into Dr. Jekyll. Dr. Jekyll’s poor story begins with his experiment of bringing out more subtle parts of his person. When he did this, he suffered a lot of physical, but only temporary pain. Jekyll soon began to suffer its enormous persuasive power. When this evil had a strong enough grip on Dr. Jekyll, it began to control him. This is why he began to be more of Mr. Hyde than Dr. Jekyll. After the first morning Dr. Jekyll woke up as Mr. Hyde, he always noticed that there was the feeling that Mr. Hyde wanted to come out more and more. Following the doctor’s ideas, it would make sense that once one of the dormant sides of a person begins to feel freedom, then they will fight for more of this freedom. Unfortunately for Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde is both is younger and has more energy than the poor doctor, so Mr. Hyde began to win control more and more. With an evil and wanted man controlling his body more than himself, Dr. Jekyll was forced to shut himself into his cabinet, and when there was nowhere else to run, Mr. Hyde was finally able to commit
