He is the father of the modern civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is recognized around the world as a symbol of freedom as well as peace. King practiced everything that he preached, he did not preach or speak values that he himself did not follow. He established himself as a pastor that was not afraid of hard work, guiding the middle-class congregation to public service. The Civil Rights movement was a very important event that helped in the forming of our country. Probably the most famous and influential civil rights movement leaders, Martin Luther King Jr. were assassinated on April 4, right outside of his hotel room in Tennessee. There were many civil rights movements and protests during this year. One example is when Jeanette Rankin, former congresswoman, lead 5000women to Capitol Hill in protest for women’s rights and the Vietnam War. This same year, the EEOC ruled that sex-segregated help wanted ads in newspapers were illegal. This opened the way for women to apply for higher-paying jobs that were open only to men at the time.

The civil rights movement was a monumental part of history and still has a large impact on society today. Martin Luther King Jnr took charge in leading the movement and achieved many things while he was leading it. The civil rights movement may not have even taken place without King and everting he put into the movement to make it happen. Malcolm X was another very influential leader that was taking charge to be a part of the movement, but had a very different approach.

In a time of progression in the United States the desire for all people to prosper and be treated equal and this led to the civil rights movement, many powerful figures rose to the public eye to push their beliefs in hopes of racial equality. When most people think of the civil rights movement of the mid-1900’s typically the person who comes to mind is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his powerful ability to unite people for the use of peaceful protests. People do not acknowledge the struggles that African Americans had to endure for them to be treated equally, the way a true American is supposed to be treated. One of the ways they were not treated equally was by not being able to participate in sports with whites. From the beginning of our nation, colored people were highly disrespected and treated as if they were some type of animals, which have no say in what happens to them. They were not given any opportunities and were treated harshly because their skin color was different. Whites were able to practically do anything they wanted, unlike blacks, who were racially discriminated or beaten for no apparent reason. During the course of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, there were several black and white supporters who had brave roles. The most prominent and persistent activist of African American rights movement was Martin Luther King Jr. King’s ideas sparked the ideal perspective of equality. Martin Luther King Jr. fought for equality by organizing marches, giving powerful speeches, and staying positive through adversity.

What comes to mind when you think of the Black Panther Party? Do you even know who the Black Panthers really were? They helped transform the lives of many African Americans in the U.S and helped empower the community. The Black Panther has a huge background of history, goals, and beliefs. Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale from Oakland, California founded the Panthers in 1966. Initially, they were an African American self defense force and were highly influenced by Malcolm X’s beliefs. The Panthers had many goals such as;freedom, protecting blacks from police brutality, and helping African Americans obtain a jobs. Despite the negative stereotypes of the Black Panthers as people who ran around with guns, fighting police, they were a major group during the Civil Rights Movement because they practiced self defense, established revolutionary socialism, and stimulated Malcolm X's influence. In the following I will discuss the successful changes the Black Panther Party, had on the African American community during the civil rights movement.

The Civil Rights Movement was a very important event in the African-American’s push for equality. Many major events happened throughout the movement that involved violence, criticism, and racism towards the blacks. African-American’s were being treated extremely unfairly and unequal to white people, almost like they were not human. Many individuals had a huge impact on this movement such as Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson, and Emmit Till. The Civil Rights Movement was a very influential period in American history that impacted millions of lives.

The impact of the Civil Rights movement changed the world as Americans knew it. The Civil Rights Movement was a movement for equal rights between whites and nonwhites, primarily African Americans. This was done in many ways from peaceful protests to violent protests. Major people form this time period include Dr. MLK jr, Malcom X, and Rosa Parks to name a few.

The Civil Rights Movement and Dr. Martin Luther King The Civil Rights movement is still identified by people across the world with Dr Martin Luther King. His day of birth is remarked with a national holiday in the United States and there are many historic sites dedicated to MLK across the nation. His funeral in Atlanta on 9th April 1968 was attended by political leaders from around the world and later in 1977 King was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom which stated that MLK was “the conscience on his generation” who…”saw the power of love could bring down segregation”.

Even though The Civil Rights movement was a tough time, it shows you that you should fight for what’s right no matter what. Prove to be like Atticus and stand up for someone when others won’t. “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”-Martin Luther
