The representation of an epic hero is found throughout Anglo-Saxon literature. The origin of english literature comes from Beowulf, the earliest known work written in old english. Beowulf is a renowned epic that has been around for years and is the basis of epic literature. Beowulf closely relates to another epic film called The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the ring, there are certain attributes in both the film and poem that reflect the epic qualities. Just like any other epic Beowulf and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring contain qualities such as a grand journey or deed of some sort, larger than life hero(s), and divine intervention.

What is an epic? Well, simply put, an epic is a form of writing that tells a story about a heroic character, using poetic lines. In this form of writing, the epic hero is the main character of the story and they are usually males. They defeat their enemies with their superhuman strengths and powers, strategic skills, and skills as warriors. Those heroes have a wide variety of characteristics including courageousness, bravery, loyalty, selflessness, etc.

Beowulf is an epic story because there are hidden meanings that occur throughout the whole story. Each event and each monster that Beowulf faces, they signify a certain person or place that is known in the Christian faith.

An epic hero is someone who is of great importance, they have supernatural abilities, have some form of connection with the Gods, and accomplish great deeds. In Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is the epic hero in his tale and he is considered great by those who know of his life. There are two versions of his story which portrays him in a certain way. The video version does not do its best to portray him as an epic hero but instead show that he is a liar, a womanizer, and a coward. The written version does not portray him as such, it portrays him as someone who is strong, brave, and fearless. The written version best portrays Beowulf as an epic hero by showing his actions involving superhuman deeds in battle.

An epic hero shows the traits that are most important to a society. During the Anglo-Saxon culture; supper human actions, bravery, and battling evil were important. Beowulf shows all of these and many others. While Beowulf was alive he fought and killed Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a dragon. Therefore he was an epic hero during the Anglo-Saxon time

In your opinion, what characteristics must a character possess to be considered an epic hero in a story? Is it someone who can defeat a giant beast? Or is it someone who shows great nobility in completing tasks for the betterment of others? In the book The Longman Anthology of British Literature, we are introduced to two heroic poems and characters by the name of Beowulf and Judith. In this Compare and Contrast Paper, I will break the common misconception of what an Epic Hero must possess as well as show you that there is no need for mythical creatures or God like weapons. Judith and Beowulf are both epic heroes, although Judith does not follow the traditional epic hero format, like having godlike strength, or encountering numinous phenomenon,

The first major characteristic of an epic is how they describe Beowulf, which shows you how epic he is, heroic he is. For example, Raffel (lines 815,1565, and 2605) Beowulf took out a very strong monster that nullifies swords with magic on them and people tried multiple times to beat him, and they couldn’t beat him in one night by himself with his bare hands without any help. Raffel (line 1565) Not to mention that he defeated his mother too, and he cut off her head.

Beowulf is thought to be one of the first major English epics estimated to be written between (insert time period) and is still to this day considered one of the greatest epics of all time. What typically would characterize a proper epic is the use of a main character known as the “Epic Hero” with a supernatural enemy that compliments the character’s traits. An epic also recounts travels, quests and heroic battles; as well highlights the ideas of good vs. evil and moral dilemmas. It is through the portrayal of the great hero Beowulf and his battles with foes to cater to the greater good that this epic is brought to life and immortalized.

An epic, is a lengthy narrative poem concerning about social and political organization, and events significant to a culture or nation. In Fred Robinson words, much of Beowulf is devoted to show the Germanic heroic code, in different aspects, which values strength, courage, bravery and loyalty in warriors; hospitality, generosity, responsibility and political skill in kings; ceremoniousness in women; and good reputation in the inhabitants.

"Beowulf" meets all the features of an epic poem: it is a long narration of a national hero ( he is recognized, rewarded and glorified by the king himself and his people), his travel on the sea, his adventures and the heroic episodes he's the central figure in. Moreover, the main protagonist, Beowulf, is a brave young man, like Gilgamesh, Achilles or Hercules, with more-than-human strength and wiser, more courageous than others. Unlike the other epic heroes we have studied untill now, Beowulf is giving us a detailed self-description when he meets the king :"In my youth I have done many glorious deed.

In The Rape of the Lock, the heroine Belinda has a piece of her hair cut and stolen from her and the major battle is trying to get her lock of hair

An Epic Hero is a brave, noble character in an epic poem, and they are admired for great achievements or affected by a grand event. In another point of view, A Epic Hero has to have strength, faith and Braveness in order to perform heroic deeds. In the story Beowulf , Beowulf is an epic hero because he kills Grendel the monster, Grendel’s Mother and a dragon that no one else could have defeated. All the things Beowulf did throughout this story showed evidence of an epic hero, also with his personality and dedication. Beowulf is an epic hero because of how he sacrificed his life to perform heroic deeds. Also for his extraordinary strength, Braveness, and Faith.
