A Critical Review of Dr. Michihiko Hachiya’s Hiroshima Diary
The United States dropped the world’s first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing thousands of people and devastating an entire nation. This event, though tragic for the people of Japan, is remembered as a symbol of Western victory in World War II. Hiroshima Diary, written by Dr. Michihiko Hachiya, is a journal that recounts the day-to-day life of Dr. Hachiya himself. The diary narrates the days following the bombing, and tracks the ups and downs of the recovering city. Michihiko Hachiya was a Japanese physician who was born in 1903 in Okayama,. Japan. He was director of the Hiroshima Communications Hospital during the time of the deadly attack on Hiroshima, Japan. Hachiya, recognized primarily for his journal, provided significant relief to those affected by the bombing. …show more content…

What started as a “warm and beautiful” (1) summer day in Hiroshima, resulted in an attack that changed the lives of many. Dr. Hachiya was resting in his home when there were sudden large flashes of light, followed by rumblings of his house, which soon thereafter collapsed following the escape of him and his wife. Post-bombing, Hachiya and his wife found refuge at the Hiroshima Communications Hospital, Hachiya’s place of employment. This hospital is the setting for the duration of the journal. The journal focuses on the aftermath of the bombing, and Hachiya’s daily life. His daily life included the medical services he provided to those that were affected, this comprised of his colleagues, family, friends, and strangers.
