The King of Beverages
It's the “Friendly Pepper Upper”, “Always One of a Kind”, and “Just What the Doctor Ordered”. Being the oldest major manufactured soft drink in America (History of Dr Pepper), Dr Pepper is all of those past slogans, and more. It's the greatest soft drink on the planet, and it will stand the test of time.
Dr Pepper has come a long way from Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store in Waco, Texas back in 1885. According to the Dr Pepper Museum website, under “History of Dr Pepper”, the inventor was Charles Alderton, who was a young pharmacist working in the drug store. In 2009, a man named Bill Waters found an old book of recipes and formulas while shopping at an antique store. Letterheads showed that the book came from Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store and had a recipe in it called “D Peppers Pepsin Bitters”. The theory that pepsin was part of the original recipe, however, was disputed by Dr Pepper Snapple Group; they instead suggest that it was a recipe for a digestive aid (Bill Waters Finds Dr Pepper).
While the origin of the name remains a mystery, Dr Pepper's rise to fame is well-known and a ideal example of the perfect American Dream in the success of a product. After the initial creation of Dr Pepper, Charles Alderton stepped aside to focus on his pharmacy work. He then handed over his creation to Morrison and a beverage chemist named Robert S. Lazenby (History of Dr Pepper). In 1891, Morrison and Lazenby formed Artesian Mfg. & Bottling Company in Waco. Eventually, the firm became Dr Pepper Company (History of Dr Pepper).
In 1904, Dr Pepper made it's debut at the World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri, and soon after became “The King of Beverages”, which was their first original slogan (History of Dr Pepper).
