The lyrics to “Angel” include the line, “…you're in the arms of the angel, may you find some comfort here…” (McLachlan, 1997) The song “Angel” honestly touches heart and soul many of people in Ohio. In “Dreamland” book Mr. Quinones presents “Angel” as funeral song for many families who have lost sons and daughters of a drug overdose. The author describes addicted children, their death, and their parents reaction. Mr. Quinones presents how parents were ashamed, and how they were tried to hide the truth about their kids drug overdose. Mr. Quinones states, “ashamed families shrouded their children's passing in a fog of euphemism and palatable lies.”(288) Everything changed when one of the parents, name Jo Anna, “found the freedom to talk publicly.”(288)
In the novel “Bodega Dreams” by Ernesto Quinonez, the protaganist Willie Bodega is known for being an assest leader to his community of Spanish Harlem. When Julio (Chino) is introduced to Bodega he makes a deal with him and of course Chino knows he can’t pass up the opportunity due to his circumstances. Chino ends up getting really involved with drug and gang activities, but decides to stay around because he uses Bodega’s social status to help him become of a higher status in Spanish Harlem. Chino benefits from the anti- heroism Bodega displays through out the community and uses it for himself. Bodega isn’t really a hero throughout the novel, but since he is so well known, people disregard the fact that he is into drugs and gangs. After Bodega
John Quinones is a journalist for ABC that created a series entitled “What Would You Do?”. These videos are typically about forcing bystander to help others in controversial situations. In the video “Teen Bullied for Being Gay: What Would You Do?” three male actors can be seen repeatedly calling a fourth male actor derogatory names for being homosexual. In the beginning of the video you get an overwhelming sense of sorrow for hardly any bystander comes to the teens rescue. This is the case until a young woman and her male counterpart are watching the scene unfold while stretching for their morning jog. Eventually she hears a “bully” say that the teen has no one there to defend him. This is when the woman steps in and speaks to the boys. When
Many people have experienced a Rite of Passage at least once in their lives without recognizing it. Experiencing a Rite of Passage is necessary to becoming an adult. A Rite of Passage can be both formal and informal, they both indicate a shift from one state to another. Formal Rites of Passages are weddings, Quinceañeras, and Bar Mitzvah, whereas informal Rites of Passages are a person’s first kiss, first job, and or the loss of a person 's virginity. Julia Alvarez focuses on the process and idea of Quinceañeras in her article "Selections from Once Upon A Quinceañera." Also included in this article is Jaider Sánchez that witnessed the sexual part of the ritual and Isabella Martinez Wall who talks about the benefits of the ritual on her life.Although many people believe that experiencing a Rites of Passage is not directly related to one 's self identity, these rituals both informal and formal do in fact affect one 's personal identity.
“Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle,” says the great Martin Luther King Jr. In the book To Kill a MockingBird by Harper Lee we see similar struggle that Dr. King battled. Atticus Finch is the only one in the small town of Maycomb willing to admit an african american might not actually be to blame. It was Atticus and Tom Roberson against Maycomb. Throughout Atticus’ interaction with the people of Maycomb he shows people the truth about equality and helped with racism. In the end we learn that it takes courage and a hard shell to beat racism, and breaking down a barrier of society can put a lot of struggle and challenge on one person.
Can transformation put fear into readers? Readers are motivated to view the story in a different perspective in order to understand stories meant to scare us. One story that uses transformation to scare readers is,”Where is Here?” Another story is,”House Taken Over.” The final story is,”The Fall of the House of Usher.” Transformation plays a role meant to scare us in these stories, because it reveals something that has been in the story the whole time, but hidden.
When analyzing this week short story, The Dead Man by Horacio Quiroa, The author of this story preoccupies his life with the human situation and state of mind of death. He is afraid of dying, I can personally relate to this story as I also am afraid of death, knowing how would I die and when. It something so unpredictable and unexpected. The author of the story explains how an old hard working farmer who day by day would pick up his machete and work on his banana grove, suddenly one day a twist of faith occurs and he unexpectedly trips over and stabs his own self with his own Macete he used daily for the growth of his crops. He suddenly dies! Causing me a shocking reaction, only because the author illustrates a story of an old man who stressed
The Angel is spending the majority of the story with the chickens in the chicken coop. He has no room to move or stretch. This signifies how Pelayo and his wife doesnt have a second thought on the comfort or for the feelings of the Angel. The Angel is found laying in the mud at the begining with dilapidated wings. It says, “He spent his time trying to get comfortable in his borrowed nest, befuddled by the hellish heat of the oil lamps and sacramental candles that had been placed along the wire,” (365). The author uses all of this to help the reader understand how low the Angel is mentally and how hard it’s going to be to overcome the adversity the Angel is facing, rather than letting the conditions of his surrounding overcome
In this film, it starts out showing the oldest form of painting which is close to 32,000 years old. The cave in which it is found is called the Chauvet cave in the south of France after the original discoverer named Jean-Marie Chauvet. In one of the paintings, the bear that was painted on the wall after the video was paused looked like I could still erase it because it looked like fresh ink. The scientist could confirm its authenticity because of the material that grew around the painting would take many years to form. For people that used their fingers, the paintings seemed to look very nice and detailed and had me wonder how horses looked back in that time, because the way they were drawn made them
“Halo” is a song about a woman who had been hurt by a past relationship and built walls around herself so she would never experience heartbreak again. (“Remember those walls I built? Well, baby they're tumbling down”) But then she meets a guy who she calls her angel or “saving grace” and she falls in love with him even though she promised herself she wouldn’t. ("i swore I'd never fall again. But this don't even feel like falling.") This guy makes her feel loved and she always prays that he
The tale of Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes is a chivalric tale that waltzes around the concept of reality versus fantasy. This is prominently shown through the character, Don Quixote. Quixote struggles with his own concepts of reality throughout the book as he believes himself to be a chivalric knight when in reality, he is far from it. Don Quixote idealized the books he read, branded his own version of his reality, and put it into action. Don Quixote so loved the books he read, he tried to become one.
“As I lay me down, heaven hear me now. I’m lost without a cause, after giving it
Imagine if you were wrongfully imprisoned for 14 years, what would you do? Would you try to get on with life, or would you try to get revenge by punishing those who caused you so much suffering? If you choose to forget the past, you may feel as if you never got justice for all you went through. Although if you choose the path of revenge, you may allow your anger to shadow your common sense. The path of revenge is chosen in Alexandre Dumas’ adventure classic, The Count of Monte Cristo.
The first stanza begins with a strong statement: "Abortions will not let you forget." It shows the sorrow
Angel reported during therapy that through her self-injury she found feelings of relief from stress surrounding conflict at home. She found that her conflict and arguing with her brother was really impacting her happiness. She also identified guilt over feeling as though she was disappointing her parents as she was pulling away from them to figure out her own way and to learn more about herself. She expressed that these situations made were too much for her to cope with. She also shared that she was feeling overwhelming responsibility for her grandmother not taking her medication, drinking too much, and feeling depressed.
When looking at the song Concrete Angel, it is apparent from the very first verse that this song addresses child abuse, however the song tells a story about child abuse, and that and the way it was lyrically written is why it was chosen as an example. When looking at this example, the lyrics speak to the child abuse by talking about a little girl going to school wearing the same clothes, and hiding her bruises. Then it speaks about neighbors ignoring the crying, and then it being too late the next morning. In the end the child that is being abused is with her angels, meaning that the abused turned out to be fatal. Therefore this song is almost in the middle in regards to sending a preventative message, because it explains what can happen when people ignore obvious signs of abuse, but then again the message that it should not have happened in the first place is not there. If they included a verse about what the outsiders seeing the abuse should have done then the song could have been seen as more preventative in regards to the child abuse. The second song which is similar to Concrete’s Angel is the song Alyssa Lies by Jason Carroll, this song was chosen because it shows that children who are friends with children are abused, will notice these things and want to help. This song once again conveys the message about child abuse that if you do not seek help, or ask for help from someone else in the beginning that it can be too late. The song addresses the fact
