Dreams have many meanings some come in various different forms. Some dreams have very deep meanings while others are just simply a product of your imagination. For example some people experience Deja Vu. Deja Vu is when you have a dream of something and then it comes to life. People who have had Deja Vu have been very surprised. A dream is a product of your imagination some are just entertaining while others might be viewed as life lessons. Some dreams have deeper meanings into them, you just have to look for them. For example some people have been having dreams of going to a certain place then the next morning they end up in the same exact place. When you arrive at the place you will have a certain feeling like you have been here before then you will remember that your dreamed about it. Dreams have so much to to do with your imagination but some are no product of your imagination but a product of reality. Dreams have many meanings they might be good, bad, and scary ,whatever they are they are still a product of you. Likewise In Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, Antonio’s dreams, thoughts, and actions help identify who he is and what he is meant to be . Antonio has been very curious about his culture and his beliefs. This has lead him to question everything he has ever believed in and why things happen. “ God knows everything. Man tries to know and his knowledge will kill us all. I want to know. I want to know the mysteries of God. I want to take God into my body and have him answer my questions.” ( Anaya 191) Antonio seeks the reasons of God. He wants to know why God does certain things. When Antonio says he wants to take God into his body he means he wants to have his Communion. Antonio wants the knowledge God has. He wants to know why God allows evil to exist in the world, he believes the world would be be better if it was “evil
Furthermore, his dreams influence his belief of religion. In one of his dreams it shows God as unforgiving and punishing. God tells Antonio that “vengeance is mine” (173). Towards the end of the dream, the Golden Carp appears as “ such beautiful brilliance that he became a new sun in the heavens” (176). The Golden Carp seems much more positive than the Catholic God because of how the different God was described as in his dream. Antonio believes more of the Golden Carp rather than God because God punished people while the Golden Carp “swallows everything good and evil…and…becomes…a new sun to shine its good light upon the earth” (176). In the first dream, it mentions of another power, describing it as the presence of the river. Antonio asks to save his brothers but “…sparks flew when [he] spoke. It is the presence of the river” (26). This foretells that there is another great
The final source of understanding for Antonio is God. He is expected to understand God, because his mother dreams for him to become a priest. He is also expected to believe in God because his mother is Catholic and that is what is expected of Antonio. "I hoped that in a few years the taking of the first holy communion would bring me understand"(77). Antonio is basically going through the motions that are expected of him. He is not genuinely excited to be taking his communion; it is just something that he feels he needs to do. He thinks that if he takes his first communion maybe he will have some answers for why there is good and evil going on around him. He says, "I want to know. I want to know the mysteries of
The significance of the aforementioned dreams changes the overall outcome of future events that will transpire. For example, in Of Mice and Men, George is very cautious with his plans, as seen in “George was on guard immediately. ‘S’pose I do,’ he said. ‘What’s that to you?’ and “George said quickly, ‘Don’t tell nobody about
When looking into the meanings of dreams, a variation of things can be found. Most people believe that dreams are a reflection of people’s inner thoughts and feelings. Most of these feelings are too private to be expressed in the real world and that is why they are expressed in a fantasy type way through dreams.
Antonio has now seen that there is power in the river, and however most people would be scared of a threatening force and power, Antonio understands its true power. He already feels his connection to a power other than the religion that he currently practices. He discovers another power that he could believe in.

However, the true exact meaning of dreaming hasn 't been proven, there has been new ideas, different methods to advances to both a psychological, science understanding of when it began and how it functions. What some of the studies have concluded is that dreams are a certain phase of the brain 's activities, that the mind experiences while you are sleep; sounds, pictures, ideas, and feelings. Both psychologists and scientist have theorized that dreaming is made up of the person’s mind, that ranges from being rare, normal, scary, and ordinary.
In Rudolfo Anaya's Bless Me, Ultima, the author uses Tony's dreams as a way of displaying various symbols. Three symbols that are used often are weather, water, and the Golden Carp. Weather is used to represent conflict. Water represents cleansing, and rejuvenation. The Golden Carp symbolizes religion and Tony's beliefs. Because dreams are a not an exact mirror of reality, they become the perfect tool for introducing symbolism. The author uses the dream as a way to access the recurring themes of the book.
Antonio for his young age deals with all sorts of emotional spiritual draining situations. Religious expectations are looked upon Antonio just like myself or anyone else you question what kind of God lets certain things happen? Is he listening? “The golden carp had seen me” is one of many sources that proves to him the almighty is watching foreshadowing forgiveness. The doubt farthers more into depth “I could have reached out and touched the holy fish” alluding to Christianity, manifestoing Antonio’s internal struggles. Rivers are the flow of life; cleansing purification. Throughout centuries water plays a big role in a religious symbol. Water brings life. Christ turns water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11), the entrance of a spiritual rebirth into the kingdom of heaven. Blood stained in the winter white snow; the river of the llano where Antonio lost his innocence witnessing a murder scene but more so a suicide. “Again the owl sang; Ultima’s spirit bathed me with its strong resolution.” Ultima guides Antonio through a world above and beyond she’s the foundation to Antonio’s experiences. “You will learn much, you will see much” Once a human being witness or experiences something even the smallest thing it will have some sort of impact on fleshing an imprint. With this you will learn what reality is really like what we don’t understand what we feel is
Throughout the story Rudolfo Anaya uses Antonio’s dreams as a device to further our understanding of Antonio, and foreshadow upcoming events. In his first dream, he witnesses Ultima midwifing his birth. Shortly after his birth his mother’s side of the family begin fighting with his father’s side of the family. They are fighting about what to do with the afterbirth, because his father’s family wanted to bury it while his mother’s wanted to burn it. Ultima quickly breaks up this argument and says because she delivered the baby, she will decide its destiny. By showing us the argument over the afterbirth, this dream foreshadows the struggle Antonio experiences trying to meet his paternal and maternal family’s expectations. His paternal family, the Marezes, expects him to be free wild vaquero, while his maternal family, the Lunas, expects him to be a
Antonio is questioning about good and bad also makes conflicts with him and God. He says things like why did God not help this, but Ultima did, or Are all people not pure and filled with sin. This is a theme throughout the book with Antonio is struggling
Antonio questions God and his religious beliefs while growing up; however, throughout my childhood, I have always had a strong Catholic faith. Antonio was born into the Catholic faith and as he grew older he created a defiance for God and his abilities. Having so many questions as a child, Antonio wanted answers. He was told these answers would come through God, but he was disappointed when the answers never came. This gave Antonio doubt in God and what he can do. This lead Antonio to finding a new God or something that would answer his questions. “Papá," I asked, "can a new religion be made?’”(Anaya 261). Since I was a young child, I
Dreams, one of the many dimensions in our mind, gives a lot of different information then we are use to having in the day. “Dreams are a series of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.” This is the true definition of what dreams are according to Free Dictionary.com. Although many people are unaware of how dreams actually work there are two psychologists that have been able to pinpoint the true meaning of dreams. These two men are Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. There are many different perceptions on how people dream, what dreams mean, and why people dream.
First, to fully understand where we are going when we are talking about dreams we first need to understand fully the meaning of consciousness and the varying levels that exists in the human brain. Consciousness is a concept explained by psychologists as the awareness of our environment
