This paper will compare and contrast positive discipline between Alfred Adler and Rudolph Dreikurs to that of Peggy Drexler’s view that children should not be shamed during discipline. They all agree there are great advantages to positive discipline. The most important advantage is it helps develop children into self-disciplined adults. Another advantage is that it nurtures stronger relationships between the parent and child, which allows the child a better understanding of their parents’ feelings. It also helps reduce power struggles between a child and his/her parents.
Alfred Adler and Rudolph Dreikurs, both psychologists who shared the same beliefs to positive discipline. Adler’s work is known as “Adlerian psychology, which emphasizes the goal of belonging and significance in all individuals, and the need for kindness and firmness

Drexler believes “it’s important to recognize discipline is not the same as punishment. Discipline is necessary. Punishment is not” (Psychology). Adler and Dreikurs agree parents who punish their children for negative behavior, rather than recognize them for their positive behavior, only lead to the child misbehaving even more. Children tend to respond better when a parent first tells them how they feel. This allows the child to connect with the parent. Once you have that connection, you can get into the discipline. When the child has a better understanding of how the parent feels, they usually don’t repeat their bad behavior.
They all agree positive discipline calls for “the need for kindness and firmness at the same time” (Carroll). Drexler believes “many kids will act out as a cry for attention or for firmer limits” (Psychology). This doesn’t mean punishment because that only makes the child feel bad, which leads to them acting out even more. Eventually, leading to a power struggle between the parent and the
Using positive reinforcement with children is imperative when teaching them correct behavior. Children seek out the approval of the parents or guardians in their life. Part of being a good parent is knowing when to show disapproval of bad behavior and reward good behavior. Remember that positive reinforcement acknowledges the good behavior in a child without focusing on their not so great performance. The two types of reinforcements that are used with children are verbal and physical.
“Fortunately, children do not need “perfect” parents. They do need mothers and fathers who will think on their feet and who will be thoughtful about what they have done. They do need parents who can be flexible, and who can use a variety of approaches to discipline.” - James L. Hymes, Jr. this quote, I can say, is physically
Individual psychology is a word that has been utilized to precisely convey the psychological technique or science that was discovered by the Viennese psychiatrist Alfred Adler. He was a man that came up with the concept of "individual psychology" which was expressed in the procedure in which Adler got the nerve to break away from the psychoanalytic school of Sigmund Freud. This amazing man called his work "free psychoanalysis" for a short time, but he later took it upon himself to reject the label of "psychoanalyst". He came up with his own method, which involved a holistic method to the study of character, which would eventually become extremely powerful in later 20th century counseling and psychiatric techniques. This paper gives us an account of his works and how individual psychology has made an impact on the world.
One of the many forms of discipline is positive discipline. Witch focuses more on encouraging the child instead of focusing on the punishment. "A parent using positive discipline might sit down with the child and say, “I know your teacher wants you to get your math paper done tonight and you don’t want to do it. What can we do to get that paper done so you’ll be able to show Mrs. Smith that you got all your homework done on time?” (Morin 1). Another form of discipline is setting boundaries for your children. Clearly stating the consequences to the child. “You won’t be able to use any of your electronics tonight until your work is done.” (Morin 1). Behavior Modification is another disciplinarian action which focuses on consequences reinforces with praise. “Remember, once you get your homework done, you get to use the computer for 30 minutes.” Praise would be offered if the child chooses to comply. The parent would ignore any protests." (Morin 1). All of these forms of
Discipline is a crucial skill for children to have in modern society. Any child who lacks discipline will face many hardships in their transition into adulthood. It allows adults to be responsible for themselves and others, thus being a trait for the greater good. The meaning of discipline is to impart skills and knowledge to a person. In this study where kids are concerned researchers ask, what is the best way to discipline a child? A child’s mental plasticity makes it both a good opportunity, and an important stage for learning things correctly. Proper disciplinary practices are important because since a child plasticity is so malleable they can pick up, unintentionally bad practices from their parents. This hurting their ultimate intentions. This is why learning correctly in this stage is important for healthy development. From people’s differences in social contexts,
From a very early age, children begin to learn about the association between behaviors and consequences. They realize that there is always going to be a consequence whether it’d be positive or negative, that would follow the behavior. Sometimes children behave very well and most of the time, children tend to give parents and others around them a hard time. When it comes to behavior modification, some basic steps include identifying the behavior, setting expectations, monitoring progress, and reinforcing correct behaviors. Positive reinforcement has a lot of effect on children when it comes to modifying a targeted behavior. A reinforcer,
Parents have different approaches on disciplining and punishing their children. There are a total of four parenting styles based on Americans (Arnett, 2016). One of the main parenting styles that I would be describing is authoritarian. According to Arnett, parental demandingness and responsiveness are used to evaluate parenting styles such as authoritarian. Authoritarian parents are high in demandingness and low in responsiveness (Arnett, 2016). This means that parents require obedience from their child, and they also punish the child for disobedience without a bargain (Arnett, 2016). There is no compromise with the child and the parent unlike authoritative parents. Authoritarian parents expect the child to follow their orders without the child’s consent or agreement. For example, the child wants a new toy would be told “NO!” without a reason why he or she couldn’t have the new toy. This shows that the parents have little to no love for their child, and their demandingness takes place with little to no responsiveness (Arnett, 2016). This parenting style shows little emotional attachment toward the child, and.
I looked for articles in an online parenting-advice magazine called Aha! Parenting. The article I chose is called 10 Steps To Guide Children Without Punishment and was written by Laura Markham (2015). The child development aspect looks closely at child discipline. The main idea of the article is that parents should not punish their children, and instead parents should stay calm and kind when children misbehave. According to the author, this is because punishments are limited at changing behavior, and in fact create even more misbehavior. I will critically look at the advice in this article using the class teachings and relevant literature.
There are many varied ways that parents, childcare centers, and schools use to provide positive guidance for children. In what might be called the flip-side, there is also a wide range of views on how children should have discipline applied.Together , these two areas of dealing with children is loosely referred to as child guidance. It would be good to give a professionally acceptable definition of what child guidance is. Child guidance is defined as “a contrived methods for external control as well as interaction with extension of development of naturally unfolding internal mechanisms” (Book ) To make the matter of guidance a bit more challenging; a parent, caregiver or teacher must also know what is the developmentally appropriate practice
positive discipline which includes positive reinforcement, taking away privileges, rewarding, and timeouts. A current controversy on child discipline was seen in 2014 with Adrian Peterson when his son was found with bruises and injuries. Adrian patterson said that his discipline was positive parenting. When this case was brought to court the question of rather parents should be allowed to use force when discipline their child or not. Along with his parenting, discipline varies throughout different cultures.
Alfred Adler (1870-1937) and Gregory Allport (1897-1967) are both greats in the world of psychology. Both are legends when it comes to theories of personalities and understanding how the human being works, learns, understands and reacts to the world around them. Understanding their theories and what they believed and what led them to think that way helps us today understand where we have been in this field and where we today. Comparing them in their beliefs and their standards helps us to comprehend where they were when they developed their theories while being surrounded by Freudians and Neo-Freudians. Adler referred to his theory as Individual Psychology because he thought that people were unique and that no theory created before his
Alfred Adler was the founder of Adlerian Counseling. He was born in 1870 in the country of Austria. who gave his theory the name Individual Psychology, because he wanted people to see that his theory and methods were designed to help clients help themselves. He believed that everyone had and internal need to be a part of society, and a desire to contribute to that society. That everyone strives for perfection, and everyone initially feels inferior to everyone else. He believed that when that feeling is not overcome, inferiority complexes develop, and if a person tries to overcompensate for inferiority, the develop superiority complex.
Thesis: Good parenting consist of many element when parenting you have to be stern. Could discipline your child lead to a lifetime disrespect? Or could discipline lead to a promising future for your child.
One positive outcome of parental discipline is the child’s development of better morals. Parental discipline is given when the child is acting up. One reason children misbehave is because they pick up on what they see around them. But what the children are picking up are not the best morals a child should have, causing the child to act up. That
A child’s attitude, actions, and demeanor tell exactly how he/she were raised in his or her household. Depending on how a child’s parent act at home when they are around their kids and by what they allow their kids to learn socially. As a child, bad behavior is learned from observation. Children watch how others interact with each other and if they visualize negative behavior along with conflict, impact their perspective with society. Although society wants children to be respectful and hold responsibility, some children are being taught by the community to retaliate and be disrespectful towards people. In the United States, the most common forms of discipline are spanking, time-outs, and punishments, which provide parents and children with confirmation, security, and order.
