The Importance of Dress Codes Dress codes have been in effect, in all walks of life, for decades upon decades. Dress codes dictate what is, and what is not appropriate to wear in that location. Business attire, school dress codes, and uniforms are all great examples of standards for dressing. The terms that identify what is attire is acceptable changes based on culture, the media, and fashion trends, but have those terms become too blurred? It seems that everyday in the United States people are trying to push the envelope when it comes to fashion and personal style. School dress codes interfere with building essential social skills. By attempting to force the entire student body to dress in a similar fashion, it makes it difficult to identify various groups, like the goths and the preps. Adolescents tend to gravitate towards the people who they identify as being similar to themselves. Like the saying goes, ‘birds of a feather flock together’. Despite this strong reasoning, students can still follow the dress code, while adding their own flair to make a statement. You can still develop your own unique sense of style, within the proper boundaries. Putting more effort and creativity into creating outfits that follow the rules, while still expressing who you are as an individual, makes a greater impact in the business or academic world. People will have greater respect for someone who is put together and polished, than someone who is grungy or sloppy. Also, the only time students are required to adhere to the dress code is during school, leaving all time spent outside of school for students to dress exactly how they want to. Many companies, like financial firms and law offices, require a basic business attire dress code. For men, this normally consists of a simple suit and tie. While for women, a suit skirt, blouse and jacket are perfectly acceptable. In addition to clothing, a company’s dress code may require a clean-cut hair style
