As Andrea is in the formal operational stage, the connection between her drinking and how it affects her is apparent. Her ability to use deductive reasoning emerges at this stage by increasing her drinking habits to determine specific outcomes. In this scenario, Andrea’s outcomes from drinking benefit her socially and emotionally. Adolescents at this age are able to think about abstract concepts and think about hypothetical situations and possible results of their actions. Moreover, adolescents have the ability to consider various solutions to problem-solve before acting. Although Andrea believes the solution to her problems is to abuse alcohol, she is not considering the future consequences of her actions. During adolescence, skills such as the ability to think logically emerge. Although this is a positive and helpful skill for adolescents during this stage, Andrea’s ability to utilize this cognitive skill impacts her negatively. Her way of thinking is that if she drinks, it will help her cope with her emotional pain and increase her social relationships. Meeting with a counselor or a teacher she trusts even for a few minutes every day can help Andrea get the support she needs to realize the importance of working towards her academic achievement since her father does not value or support her education. Andrea used to strive to get grade A’s in all of her classes and was focused on her education which not only helps to develop her self-esteem and identity, but it also contributes to a possible bright future. In addition, if Andrea truly believes in the importance of her education, she will be able to internally motivate herself to try the best she can on her own rather than just being forced to perform better in
