Driver- Demographics
Predicting future is always important as it identifies whether the changes are likely to benefit human kind or annihilate them. Demographics gives people a basic insight about how their past and future are inter twinned. One of the key drivers that has been assigned to me by my group is Demographics. Although there are many trends that may fully/partially have impact on personal transport. The key factors that I would like to focus on in this summary are
• Global Population/ worldwide populace
• Urbanization
• Migration
TREND 1 - GLOBAL POPULATION – Population is likely going to increase in 2070
In 2070 the human population will be at its extreme levels. During the past couple of years the world has dramatically changed in terms

From the past 18th century to the present 21st century. The developments and improvisation in all primary and secondary sectors brought humans under one urban roof, where things are easy to access ranging from sanitation to electricity and internet. The world’s urban population has increased form 733 million in 1975 to 2,857 million in 2000 and is estimated to reach 4,945 million by 2030 (storage). This pattern over the past 50 years gives us an insight about the net gain in urban population. Urban dwellings has transformed current cities into mega cities with population emerging up to 10 million. This rapid urbanization growth brings us a question about transportation. According to the information provided by PRB the number of megacities increased from 4 in 1975 to 22 in 2015(PRB). This trend indicated that in future there will be more cities entering into megacity categories, where the need for development of public transport sectors. Every two people in United States now have a car. If this is going to continue there would be 5.3 billion cars on roads by
The world population of 7.2 billion in mid-2013 is projected to increase by almost one billion people within the next twelve years. It is projected to reach 8.1 billion in 2025, and to further increase to 9.6 billion in 2050 and 10.9 billion by 2100. This assumes a decline of fertility for countries where large families are still prevalent as well as a slight increase of fertility in several countries with fewer than two children per woman on average.
the year 2050. Population growth at an overwhelming rate can cause many effects on a
The team addresses that the main purpose of the study is to address long-term inter-regional transportation problems and opportunities and to consider alternative actions to addrees these issues as part of developing an integrated, multi-modal transportation system that permits the capable movement of people and goods, and provides better economic and transportation linkages between urban growth centres in the GTA west study area (figure 1) (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). In order to finalize the purpose of the study, the project team identified the specific transportation problems and opportunities within the study area (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). They developed, assessed and evaluated a range of Area Transportation System Alternatives to address the identified issues relating to transportation, and opportunities presented within the study area (Transportation development strategy report, 2012). Lastly, the team recommended a Transportation Development Strategy based on the Area Transportation System Alternatives supported onward from the assessment (Transportation development strategy report,
VEHICULAR GROWTH: The uncontrolled and ill planned growth of urban centers has resulted in a number of problems like traffic congestion, shortages of water and electricity, deteriorating environment and public health. The growing cities have generated the high levels of demand for travel by motor vehicles in the cities. To match the increasing travel demand commensurate efforts have not been made to develop the mass transport systems
As time goes by, the human population increase every year. This also means an increase
Earths population is rising at a really high rate about 75 million a year. Its estimates the population will be 8.4 billion by mid 2030, and 9.6 billion by mid 2050. The more the population rises the more materials thats gonna be used for everyday life resources. More deforestations gonna happen for land and room for houses and what not.
Automobile is one of the most important transportation thing that is now governing the transportation all through the world and it's use is rising over the time. The North Americans seem to be dependent on automobile, but the new implementation of urban planning methods and new transportation systems is going to take on automobile use in coming years and some reasons are as following.
At year 1700 the life expectancy rate was 27 years on average which was bad because that meant many people didn’t live past the ability to reproduce. Compared what the life expectancy rate would be in 2100 which is 81 years According to text 1’s table. This is a huge gap between ages and this means the population would keep increasing. Also, from this graph we can see that at year 1700 the population of people was at 68,000,000 compared to 9,460,000,000 in 2100. This rise of population is good because more people will speed up Collective Learning and make networks even bigger. When this happens better innovations will pop up making us have more upgraded technologies. An example of a helpful technology is vaccines. VAccines provided people with a way to fight deadly diseases, such as Smallpox, and Diphtheria. Before vaccines were available 29,005 people died per year
“Our generation grew up knowing all about the effects on the environment that cars can have, so we’ve grown up with an attitude of wanting to do our part for the earth – something that we can easily do with public transit and not with cars.” (Millennials and Mobility. p34) The role of public transportation from being a social service provided to persons who have limited transportation options to being the transportation mode of choice. With this come high expectation that public transportation will transform to meet the lifestyle needs of the riding public including access to information and options. “We are well-connected when it comes to searching and finding information we need to plan our transportation ahead of time.” (Millennials and Mobility.
Regional Transportation in New Urbanism includes mass transit that is of easy access to the people that live within the vicinity. The public transportation in New Urbanism is meant to carry large amounts of people at once such as light-rail busses, and subways in order to get them to their destination quickly to minimize the amount of time it takes them to get where they need to go since the commutes are fairly short. This also cuts down on car trips since the busses and subways are within walking distance, and provides people with more time for family and community life, and can even bring low-income workers to suburbs where there are many jobs. In terms of Urban Sprawl, many businesses, shops, and jobs are not within a close distance, and as a result, many have to drive themselves to their destinations. A vast amount of people rely on highways to get to wherever they need to go, and
9.7 billion, is the number of people that will be living on Earth by 2050 if the human race keeps increasing at the same pace it has been through this past century. The articles, “Are There Too Many People?” by Nicholas Eberstadt, “Biodiversity, Extinction, and Humanity’s Future: The Ecological and Evolutionary Consequences of Human Population and Resource Use” by Jeffrey Yule et. al., “A Paradox of the World Population Stabilization Policy” by Mahmudul Alam et. al. and the Ted Talks, “The Earth is Full” and “Overpopulation Facts-The Problem No one Will Discuss” have similar trends in their research. These articles and TedTalks have similar trends in research because the trends in these informational sources consist of the causes, effects,
The development of every nation hinges on the effectiveness of their transportation systems. Movement of goods, services and people to and from work is made possible by transportation systems. The importance of effective transportation systems cannot be over-emphasized. A lot of countries are facing Transportation problems and my country Ghana is no exception. A trip of about 30 minutes can take about an hour or more due to traffic jams. This is seriously impacting productivity and has been a topical issue in the country. The situation is the same in Uganda where I currently work. To this end, Transportation Engineers are needed to design roads/ highways that will stand the test of time, plan effective traffic management systems to reduce travel
2) Is the global population growing exponentially and why? This answer (to me) can be yes and no. According to Roser and Ortiz-Ospina (2017), actual growth is declining, but the population is rising. In the 20th century, the world’s population quadrupled; but will not double in the 21st. The fastest doubling period was 1950-1987 (37 years) when the population grew from 2.5 billion to 5 billion. Since 1962 when the growth rate was 2.1%, the growth rate has slowed along with the doubling rate. It is also estimated that the world’s population will reach 11 billion by 2088, but will have taken nearly 100 years to get there. As resources begin to taper off, so will growth – this is known as Logistic Growth. I do not believe we are there yet, however, we are heading there. I do not know if this is an indicator or not, but Japan is experiencing a population shift where the elderly outnumber the younger and is expected to increase in the coming decades and the population is shrinking
The increasing world’s population is a global issue and becomes a source of anxiety for many scholars and decision makers around the globe. U.S. Census Bureau estimated that population growth will persist into the 21st century, growing from 6 billion in 1999 to 9 billion by 2044 (2010). In a longer term, it is also projected that human population may keep increasing up to 36.4 billion in 2300 (United Nations, 2003). Population upsurge is considered a centre piece for a range of problems world would encounter in the future. This essay will point out some of main problems generated by population increase and propose some solutions to cope with the issues. In particular, the focus will be on environmental, health, and social issues.
The objective of this paper is to understand the modes of road transportation, the role of road transportation in urban areas, the role of transportation infrastructure in
