The driving age in the state of Virginia is fine and should not be changed. Making the driving age higher doesn’t help anyone. If the driving age is changed teens that have jobs that drive themselves to work will not be able to anymore. Even though it would make a little less traffic it will inconvenience a lot of people. Lots of accidents happen because of people not looking at the road, using their phones, Dozing off, or even just daydreaming, but if teens are taught better while in school, or driving class, they will know not to do something silly like that.
Only 6.4% of accidents are caused by teens, Over 50% of these accidents are caused by alcohol impaired drivers. Over 50% of all fatal highway crashes involving two or more cars are alcohol related. According to the NHTSA, over 3,000 people were killed and over 300,000 injured in motor vehicle accidents connected to distracted driving. That represents 10% of all fatal crashes and 17% of all accidents that caused injuries. Teen drivers

A lot of people don’t trust teen drivers with driving in heavy traffic, and long distance trips. If an adult gets into an accident with another adult, like if one turned when the other had the right of way they would just have to deal with insurance. If a teen got into an accident with an adult they would try to blame it on the teen saying that they are inexperienced and it’s all their fault and most likely the teen would get their brand new license revoked.
If you want someone to be successful you will help them in anyway you can. Like if someone one know is struggling with a social problem you would introduce them to your friends. So if you see a teen driver struggling on the road driving badly you should correct them. Increasing the age of driving doesn’t help 16 year olds that have jobs it just makes life harder for
Firstly, studies have shown that many of the crashes recent regulations for 16 year olds have prevented actually only happen two years later when there are no restrictions. As stated in the article Teenage Driving Laws May Just Delay Deadly Crashes by Anahad O’Connor, “there have been 1348 fewer deadly crashes involving 16-year-old drivers. But at the same time, there have been 1,086 more fatal crashes that involved 18-year-olds. The net difference is still an improvement, Dr. Masten said, but not quite the effect that many had assumed.” This shows that drivers are simply waiting to become 18 in order to skip the restrictions placed on the younger drivers. Knowing this, we ought to make regulations that encourage drivers to learn to drive while under these heavier regulations, so that they can get real on-the-road experience while not being in as much risk of
Don’t get me wrong, driving for anyone can be dangerous, let alone teenagers. In an article from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the author talks of studies as well as actual real life numbers. “During 2004--2008, a total of 9,644 drivers aged 16 or 17 years were involved in 9,494 fatal crashes. A total of 4,705 (50%) crashes involved one vehicle; 3,976 (42%) involved two vehicles; and 813 (8%) involved three or more vehicles. A total of 8,274 (87%) crashes resulted in one fatality, 986 (10%) resulted in two fatalities, and 234 (3%) resulted in three or
Raising the legal driving age from 17 to 18 is unwise as 17 year olds have a much more focused mind at this point in their lives as they are not consumed by necessities such as year 12 results, planning for the future and either obtaining or maintaining employment. Continuing to keep the driving age at 17 will lower stress in teens as it is one part of their lives that they have control over and gives them freedom which leads onto my next point, freedom.
Adolescents can be immature, careless and reckless, especially when they’re trying to show off to their other friends. The general public somewhat views eighteen as an appropriate age at which young people grow into adults. As a result, driving should be one of those privileges and responsibilities of being welcomed into adulthood. On the other hand, permitting young people to drive at the same age as they are allowed to consume legal drugs such as alcohol and nicotine surely is a big step in the wrong direction. By agreeing to let young people to have the responsibility to drive without the attraction of illegal drugs, nonetheless, you are giving them an opportunity to learn, first hand, the real risks, threats and encounters of driving, hopefully being able to benefit young people make better and more responsible decisions whilst driving. Not only is driving not equal to that of drinking or smoking as it requires an ability test, but those who do drive have to abide to strict laws and registrations. Adolescents are taught how to properly drive cars and have to be able to prove that they can perform to a specific level before they are able to get their licences.
On the counterclaim side if the driving age is raised to 18 then it will save young lives. On Average about nine teens ages 16-19 are killed everyday from car wrecks. If it's raised to 18 then there won’t be as many teens ages 16 and 17 killed in car wrecks. A lot of teens lose their lives a year do to car accidents. On average about 6,000 teenagers die a year due from car wrecks. So that's why it might be a good idea. According to( DRIVE-SAFELY.NET) “ A sixteen year old is almost twice as likely to die in a car crash then a 30 year old.”
Due to the fact that once you turn 18 and so on you are now considered an adult and should be old enough and mature to take the responsibility in your actions. They have also made a law saying that “graduated driver's licensing program as they are known bar young drivers have a higher risk as in being out on the streets late at night”. They have also set an age at when teens can drive or be behind the wheel. They get a temporary license until they are fulfilled to get their license. Their should be no problem in letting teens drive now a days because they are the new generation and should be able to go out and explore like the rest of the adults. It shouldn't matter whether they are 17,18,19 and so on they should have the legal privilege to be able to be behind the wheel without any problem. Many teens also learn how to drive in case of an emergency where they can get somewhere fast or go somewhere. Put it this way no matter if you're young or old you will at one point get into an accident or a small one or any type and you will be any age. Its not because you are older or anything doesn't mean you're not going to get into an
The argument that teenagers are too immature to be good drivers doesnt have any solid evidence to support it. Some say that the statistics about teenage accident rates are proof enough for this argument but other factors are involved. The most important factor to consider here is how much experience the driver has. While sixteen is the minimum driving age, sixteen and seventeen year olds
Multiple studies and surveys show how deadly a vehicle can be when the driver is a teen. Teenagers are given a responsibility at the age of sixteen that they are simply not ready for. They lack the ability to stay focused on the road, and often times get distracted by cell phones or other objects inside the car that more experienced drivers know to avoid. Fortunately, the negative impact that teen driving presents can be altogether halted. Teens can find alternative ways of transit such as buses or asking family members for a ride. Mandatory driving programs can be implemented which focus on helping teens prove they can be responsible, trustworthy drivers. Most importantly, the legal driving age can be adjusted to twenty one to ensure all drivers retain the right knowledge for safe
Reading the article Should the driving age be raised? written by Shari Roan, got me thinking about the safety of teenagers as well as adults. The article explains a lot of what the requirements are in order to be driving in all the 50 states. It gives us statistics on how many lives of young adults we’ve lost throughout the years but, thankfully the restrictions that DMV’s are putting on 16 to 17 year olds has allowed the percentages to drop. Although, the accidents are now increasing with drivers in the age category of 18 to 19 year olds. The article reminds us of the risk we as teens put ourselves Reading this article has lead me to thinking that we as teens need to take more responsibility for our actions and agree into raising the age to drive, but of course with some other restrictions and requirements.
The false assumptions people have about teens is unfair to the teens who are actually responsible. I as a teen understand how dangerous driving is and how I am responsible for my passengers lives while at the wheel. Why should the driving privilege given to teens at sixteen be changed because of a few bad kids? People need not to have a bad outlook on teens just because some teens are infact immature, but some adults are not very mature either. Teens just need to not be stereotypes then teenagers would not have any excuse to act up if people expected more out of them. Sixteen year olds are perfectly capable of driving, and the new found responsibility could even make teens act more mature.
The driving age should be raised because the most likely ages to be involved in an accident are between sixteen and nineteen. The younger the teenager is the higher risk a person is to be in a crash. The reason for this is because of not being mature enough or not a lot of practice. “Those who are most at risk are males, teen driving with teen passengers, and newly license teens” stated National Graduated Driver Licensing. Males usually have a higher risk to be in a crash because they are not mature enough and want to show off to all the girls. They sometimes don’t like to wear seatbelts and when they get into a crash, they won’t survive the
The driving age should resume to stay at 16, because high school is the time you need to start learning how to be independent as a young adult. This teaches the young adults at an early age, really big responsibilities that they will need to learn also in the long run. There will be times that you won't have anyone to drive you to a certain place that you need to be based on circumstances. By the time you are 18, you are considered an adult by then. If you are just learning to drive, how are you suppose to be comfortable going places without being afraid to be in an accident or cause an accident, because you never drove before? Raising the driving age won't save lives. It's inexperience, not age, that causes accidents. Raising the driving
However, they said that it helps out their family out big time, they can drive to school and have a better chance of making there on time, they need to drive at a young age so they have more experience because no one is naturally experienced at anything. One friend really surprised me and said that it shows their parents that he or she can be responsible on their own out in the world. Besides asking friends, FOX news also had some stories about it. Some people said that way too many people think teens cannot drive because they act like children or do not fully understand driving yet, however, you got a huge portion of older adults texting and driving, driving under the influence, speed in small areas. For example, last Thursday, I was walking to the bus and a middle age man in a SUV sped up super fast right adjacent to me and almost killed me, so there, adults can do the same exact things teens can do.
Teenager are ready to get on the road at the age of sixteen when it is legal to get your license. They are ready for freedom and ready for a big life ahead of them, little did they know it take responsible to drive a car because if you don’t follow the rules from the state or your parents, you can in up in a wreck. There are more teen driver that happen to get in a wreck than adults do. Teen drivers have a history of being unsafe drivers, so precautions have been made to limit wrecks caused by them. They have the basic skills to drive.
All in all the government shouldn't change the driving age. They should keep it the same so people can focus on work, school and becoming independent. Teenagers shouldn't have to rely on people as an adult. When teens turn 18 that's when our life really starts and we don't want to be held back because of
