Drought in California The drought in California has seriously impacted California in a negative way and will continue to impact California negatively if it continues. Drought in California has always played a huge part in California’s geography and without action to help prevent the affects of long lasting droughts California will continue to suffer severe negative effects, which can lead to serious negative impact on the rest of the country as well. Drought has been occurring in California even before it was named a state in 1850, but the current drought in California has people worried that it could become a “mega drought”. It would affect many different aspects of the state including economically, it will also affect the manufacturing industries, it will affect fishing, it will affect the cities of California especially southwestern cities, reservoirs would also be dried up in a couple of years, and most of all it will affect agriculture. Farmers will take probably the biggest hit from the continued drought. One of the biggest industries in California is agriculture and without it there would be little to no consumable water. “In an average year farmers use 80 percent of the water consumed by people and businesses- 34 million of 43 million acre-feet diverted from rivers, lakes and groundwater, according to the State Department of Water Resources.” (Rogers 2014) The effects of a mega drought would leave farmer’s crops unplowed and the limited amount of water they would have to keep everything alive wouldn’t be enough because of the wells they had would go dry. And to build new wells it would cost more than the value the farmers would be getting from the crops.
