This literature review is about the relationship between drug abuse and homelessness. Drug abuse is the habitual taking of addictive or illegal drugs.There is a growing correlation between drug abuse rates and homelessness. In some cities, substance abuse is the number one reason for homelessness among single adults. There are as many as three million homeless people in the United States. Homelessness is a growing problem that is affecting more and more people everyday. It is wrong to say that most homeless people are addicts and that most addicts are homeless but studies have show that there is a strong correlation between the two. According to Didenko and Pankratz (2007), two thirds of homeless people report that drugs and/or alcohol were a major reason for their becoming homeless. Alcohol abuse is also a problem that relates to homelessness. Alcohol abuse is the habitual misuse of alcohol. This tends to happen often with homeless people more than drug abuse because it is cheaper and also very addictive. The homeless see these addictive substances as a way to cope with their homelessness. It is believed that about 38% of homeless people abuse alcohol while 26% regularly use other drugs. These statistics show that substance abuse among this group is significantly higher than the general population; this statistic may not seem that bad but compared to our entire population it is much greater.
