Drug Abuse in the NFL
It's nothing new for the National Football League's players to be abusing anabolic steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. Drug abuse in the league has recently focused around recreational drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, and alcohol. The newest drug being abused is painkillers. The commissioner and his personal need to change their policies. Will they wait until many more players start to die before they tighten up their drug policies? The National Football League (NFL) can stop most of these drug problems by having more random drug tests given, enforcing stricter punishments when players are caught using drugs, and requiring every team to educate its players annually on the effects and consequences

Professional athletes with drug addictions are a major problem because these players are role models for young athletes all around the world. Many children see their idols getting caught using drugs and alcohol. This causes them to think that if their favorite player is using that drug, well then they should be using drugs also. (Nattiv and Puffer). There would be less young athletes experiencing with these dangerous drugs if the players would spend more time talking about the negative side of drugs. All the blame cannot be pinned on the players only. The NFL itself and its high officials are also to blame. If they would take action and acknowledge the drug problems, they could help the players stay away from these potentially fatal mistakes. If other corporation's (except alcohol and tobacco companies) were leading children towards drugs and alcohol, they would probably do anything they could to prevent that from happening.
Major corporation's require drug tests for people applying for a job position. This is a good way for companies to make sure they don't hire employees with substance abuse problems. Hiring people with substance abuse problems is common in the NFL. This is concerning because the NFL requires a drug test for all players entering the league. Collegiate players entering the draft are tested before they can become eligible for the NFL. If a person applying for a corporate position gets caught with drugs in his system, they will be dismissed
Every sports team seems to have that one person that has to be the best, and will go to the extreme to make themselves better. Especially the guys that are a little old and feel as if their training is not good enough to keep up with the youngsters. When I say “extreme” I am talking about steroids. Once the Russian weightlifters introduced this performance enhancing tool to the U.S, some players in almost all major sports, any age, any gender, and any race just cannot get enough of it. Watching ESPN, I see that there is no sign of Athletes slowing down even with a chance of having bad health conditions, being penalized by getting fined, and hurting the team by getting suspended for a certain amount of days; showing that taking steroids and
Drugs can take over someone’s life it’s an addiction, and a hard one to overcome. With the kind of money NFL football players make you can see many fall into the trap of drugs. When using Jamal Lewis case to prove the point that professional athletes shouldn’t get banned from their sport because of a drugs you can see why. If Jamel Lewis didn’t get a second chance, he would have not signed with the Cleveland Browns in 2007. Lewis would not have the 3rd most rushing yards of all time, and get the Ravens Ring of Honor on September 27, 2012. Many people make mistakes and being a professional athlete have a lot of pressure on you. Everyone should get a second chance no matter the outcome of your
Do we really want student-athletes replacing hard work with steroids? That’s like cheating on a test. For instance, many have been abusing drugs in a way to make their performance on the court or field better. This is a practice athletes have been in for years to make them a better player or asset to the team. All who are participating in athletics should be guaranteed a safe and fair game instead of worrying about those taking a daily dose of drugs for their own pleasure. These actions they are taking are not only dangerous and unfair, but illegal. For those who do participate in the consumption of drugs, their should be a formidable punishment. Although some uninformed people might say drug testing is an unnecessary waste of time and money,
this, Strawberry had no team to call his own, as he was suspended from baseball
Drug test on student athletes use to be very common in many schools but now there is not any drug test for the students which is very pathetic because there are so many other great athletes that could take their spot and actually get a scholarship for college. Besides ruining their own future, student athletes should be required to take a drug test because they could be ruining someone else’s future. Ruining someone else’s future because of their bad habits is really just a horrible thing to do. If a student athlete is not required to take a drug test but they are on drugs anyway then that student could be ruining someone else’s future, and what that means is that there could be another student who is a great athlete with good grades, and attendance but can not get a scholarship because the student on drugs did, then that student will feel so horrible about themselves and always questioning themselves on why they just could not receive a scholarship, and it is all because of the student on drugs. If student athletes need their pain medication they should go down to the main office they have, many of the student use the pain medication as drugs rather than doing actual drugs. In the article on the website www.tandfonline.com the author states, “Fewer athletes
“A medical dictionary defines a drug as ‘any substance that when taken into the living organism may modify one or more of its functions’” (Newton 12). However, when speaking of drug testing for abuse a person is usually thinking about illegal drugs or drugs that can alter athletic performance in sporting events. Mandatory drug testing was not allowed in public schools until June 2002 when the Supreme Court allowed for public schools to do random drug testing (Carroll 23). This decision allowed for drug testing in all schools throughout the United States not just for athletes but also students who are in any activities within the school, for example clubs and competitive events (Carroll 23). Even though drug testing is now allowed by
Temptation is the root of all evil. Temptation has been seen since the beginning of humanity. It was seen in the start of some religions, and in most forms of literature. Throughout time and the different kinds of literature I have been exposed to, I have come to the realization that most often it is the youth that falls into temptation. Youthful temptations throughout history suggest that humanity has not changed over time.
Drug testing has become a very big issue for many companies. Approximately eighty-one percent of companies in the United States administer drug testing to their employees. Of these, seventy-seven percent of companies test employees prior to employment. Even with the commonality of drug testing, it is still a practice that is generally limited to larger corporations which have the financial stability, as well as the human resources to effectively carry out a drug testing program. In the United States, it is suggested that as many as 70 percent of drug users are employed. Now this is a huge chunk, but as a result of drug testing, these big corporations have a significantly lower percentage of the employed drug users on their
At work workers always have to be doing their job the correct way. For the employer they have to have reliable workers. “Many companies test job applicants for illegal drug use as part of the employment hiring process.” (Doyle) .Doing a yearly drug test to see who isn’t doing their job correct is an action many businesses are taking now. It makes it a safer environment
The same congressional committee that did the steroid investigations in baseball, and also conducted congressional hearings, is also interested in the policies of the National Football League. The problem is not as big in the NFL as it is in the MLB, but it is still a problem. David Boston, a wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins, tested positive for the usage of steroids. He was suspended for four games. He stands to lose $1.34 million, and in a statement issued, he denied the usage of steroids. Also Broncos receiver, Adrian Madise was suspended for four games for using anabolic steroids. Former Football player, Jim Haslet has admitted to steroid use, and also talked about the fact that it was easy for everyone to do, because at that time the National Football League had no policy regarding steroid use, mainly because it was not illegal at that time. The NFL has sense then, implemented testing for all of its players. The NFL has had random testing
Performance-enhancing drugs should not be allowed in sports and the ban should be more strictly enforced. They could do random drug testing and make them sit out games if they are caught with drugs in their system. Instead of using performance-enhancing drugs they could do exercises and dieting to help them improve their performance on the field. Some of the players are honest and do not do the performance drugs, so why should they suffer because everyone else is using them. They are put at the bottom, below the ones using drugs just for the simple fact that they are honest and work hard to be able to perform correctly during games. The individuals using drugs are able to build muscle quicker and are often first string compared to the others.
Performance Enhancing Drugs has not only infected professionals it is now beginning to infect amateurs as well. College and high school players want to take it to become better than their competition. Only a select few of these athletes will ever play at the next level of college football and even less
Drug testing is something that many modern companies do to protect the integrity of their organizations. An employer must ensure that all prospective employees are free of using drugs that can hinder their performance or initiate company liabilities. Employers have several options for performing drug tests on potential and current workers. The following contains some information about such options:
Some companies are implementing testing in certain employees especially those in high-risk industries such as: Construction, Long-Haul Drivers and Public Safety. There are some organizations that are including testing in their policy to deter substance abuse users to deter them from applying. The forms of testing include: Urine, Breathalyser, Hair Sample and Blood Test. There are both pros and cons to including this in a policy:
Many companies drug test their employees as a part of the application process. This is in attempt to reduce the number of drug users that they employ. This is something that they do to bring up the quality of their applicant pool. This has been found to be very effective for several reasons. It denies the employment of applicants who test positive in the drug test, while at the same time weeds-out applicants that know they will not pass the test. As a company this shows the best possible future employees because only quality employees will pass though the drug test allowing them to continue the applicant process. Employers have extensive applications to show the true colors of the applicant.
