Drug and Alcohol Abuse
Thesis: Drug abuse, also known as substance abuse, is a patterned use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or with methods which are harmful to themselves or others. Many teens turn to marijuana, prescription drugs, club drugs, alcohol, or other substances as a means of coping with stress, peer influence, and failure of parents to prevent their children from making unreasonable decisions.
According to the yearly “Monitoring the Future” survey of high school age teenagers in the United States, by the time our kids complete high school, a minimum of 40 percent have consumed an illicit drug and 70 percent have consumed alcohol.
A. Drug addiction is defined as a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the drug addict and those around them.
B. CBS News reports did a recent survey which showed that 980,000 teens between the ages of 12 and 17 currently need treatment for drug abuse, but only about 130,000 get the help they need.
This is 40% of teens in this age group experimenting with illegal drugs. Based on the survey that CBS News published, teen addiction is a serious problem (CBS News, 1).
By the time teenagers reach 11th and 12th grade, many would have already abused alcohol and drugs and many of those teenagers start to develop alcohol and drug addiction. 65% of high school juniors and seniors reported abusing drugs
