I truly believe that if you can approach and tackle an issue before it arises you have a better chance of preventing long-term issues that will emerge in the future. Through my studies I have learned that if you educate students on bad choice making and the consequences that come from it you have a better chance for those students not to make those bad decisions. For this Midterm Project I plan to target high school students and inform them about drug use and abuse. In my opinion I think that if we teach high school students the effects that drugs can have on your body and your future maybe we can prevent them from using drugs for the first time or stop the issue before it gets out of hand. Students who are in high school can be hard to talk to but if you use material and language that catches their attention your speech can very influential to them. I want to prevent teens from using drugs. I want and need them to be educated on all the harms that illegal substances do to your body immediately after using them and what long-term effects come with it as well. Students should be shown real life examples of citizens who have lived their lives influenced by drugs and examples of successful people who have chose a
I can’t speak for the entire State of Texas but Travis County drug court is making a positive impact on offenders’ lives. Two judges who manage Travis County’s drug court are directing addicts into a court supervised treatment program instead of incarceration. Drug courts like the one in Travis County have successfully handled nonaggressive defendants with drug and alcohol addictions. People who complete drug court programs rarely fall back into substance abuse. Per four drug-court judges surveyed, about 10 percent of program graduates commit new crimes. That’s a recidivism rate of one-fifth that of traditional probation programs. Which shows drug courts can ease the strain on congested penitentiaries and save taxpayer money. A study done by

The image of a “crackhead” was painted in the minds of Americans and that image, unfortunately, was of young African Americans in low income areas smoking crack in dark allies. It was not representative of the whole population of men and women who actually use crack; which is mostly white. However, it is the image that is still associated with crack cocaine use

The main problem is that there are too many people incarcerated for crimes that range from non violent drug offenders to harmful federal crimes. “Extreme sentencing laws have pushed the number of people in American jails and prisons to over 2.3 million (). These unnecessarily long sentences have led to bloated, overcrowded prisons and wasted billions of taxpayer dollars that could be better invested in our communities” (). There are approximately 318.9 million people in the United States so that means 2.3 million people incarcerated is around 7.2% of American citizens are in some form of correctional control. Drugs are often considered only as a public health problem only. This could be true for the consumer countries, but on the other hand, the producers face additional struggles. The cocaine trafficking is the most important security threat in Peru because it is associated with the organized crime and terrorist groups in the country and the region. I would consider the drug related crimes taking place over the U.S. and Mexico border to be a transnational crime. I base this decision off the definition of transnational crime in oxford bibliographies. The definition says these crime are "violation of law that involve more than one country in their planning, execution, or impact". Also it goes further to point out three basic categories of crime, one of which is involving provision of illicit goods (drug trafficking and more). So by definition the drug related problem would be considered a transnational crime.
