There are many types of drug prevention programs across the United States and many of them focus on school-aged children. The basis of this focus is the belief that this is the portion of society that can be influenced the most in education and prevention of drug use. Many school- aged children view drugs as a big problem in the United States, according to surveys that have been conducted. The majority of parents however are unaware of the current drug trends and many do not discuss drugs with their children. In this report I will be discussing some of the drug prevention programs that are currently in effect and look at one of the past drug prevention programs that was a success. During the 1990’s there were numerous drug campaigns that …show more content…
Another complaint of this program is that it does not promote interaction between the students. D.A.R.E. is one of the abstinence models which are highly used throughout the United States, however studies continue to show that they are not effective. It has been found through studies that school programs are only effective for the first year or two after students complete them. I do not doubt the studies that have been done on this subject, but find it very disheartening. I was a School Resource Officer at a middle school and was personally involved in teaching this program for three years. I did see that there was a positive reaction from the students and community in respect to this particular program. I did however see that as the children moved on to high school that they seemed to forget or lose the values that were taught to them. One of the greatest downfalls of this program that I can see is that it is started at an Elementary School level, but not continued throughout school. It also is not assembled to advance with the children as they get older and address new problems. Programs need to have a high repetition and adapt as society changes in order to be effective. There have been other programs established to continue on into the higher grade levels and address problems that students will face with

Throughout schools in the United States, there is a growing issue in our elementary through highschool aged students. Drugs and alcohol have begun to overtake childrens lives as young as twelve years old. There are many types of drugs involved from prescription drugs, which is the number one drug, to alcohol, marijuana, meth, cocaine, heroine, or inhalents.
The program is for struggling rising ninth graders. The program is also meant to help with the transition from middle school to high school by having math and English on a daily basis. The students get the extra help with work from teachers involved in the program and extra tutoring. Also they thoroughly go through lessons to make sure the student understands the work that is given.
Schools across the world have been indoctrinating young children into believing certain ideas, and behaving in certain ways since the beginning of modern schooling. One of the many ideas that are luckily forced upon our next generation is that drugs, even today, are a massive problem. Often enough, the rumors are true about drugs and teens today, children are being confronted with drugs in schools nearly everyday. One such person was Bryan, Bryan was at one point an average kid that was in high school however he had some rather peculiar friends.(Smoking)
Schools across the country have reported positive progress under this system. The approach is highly inclusive allowing for the input from the individual State and Local School Boards which, can and often does filter down to the teachers themselves creating programs that all involved can support and uphold.
The following is a summary of the President’s policy emphasizing on the President’s stated objectives. Every year millions of teenagers experiment with prescription drugs and many they think prescription drugs are safer than illicit drugs found on the streets. “According to the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University, teens who abuse prescription drugs are twice as likely to use alcohol, five times more likely to use marijuana, and twelve to twenty times more likely to use illegal street drugs such as heroin, Ecstasy and cocaine than teens who do not abuse prescription drugs” ("Drug free world," n.d., p. A1). These figures demonstrate the need and urgency we must teach our young people to avoid drug use which will minimize their chances of developing other substance abuse problems. The Taskforce will
Within this article it expresses how drug control is one of the most important public policy issues in the United States. It explains how drug abuse has tremendous economic and social consequences in many countries. This article also elaborates how young people start drug use as early as age 15. Therefore, most drug prevention programs target young people while in school. Many researchers stress that the best way to limit drug abuse is to target children and stop them from initiating drug use at an early age before even getting in contact with drugs.
Doctor Hanson identifies programs that are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as effective for specific target groups. Each of these three programs take place before high school, which further proves the earlier statement of early education being the most important characteristic of a drug prevention program. The programs are as follows, “Life Skills Training Program (LST) -LST is a school-based substance abuse prevention program for students 10-14 years of age. It teaches general personal and social skills, specific resistance skills, and normative information. Project ALERT - Project ALERT is also a school-based program, in this case for students in middle school. It teaches drug abstention norms, reasons to abstain, and resistance
A drug addiction treatment center is designed to help individuals recover from a drug or alcohol addiction. Depending on the individual's unique addiction and co-occurring disorders, they may need a variety of different treatment options. Treatment centers may offer programs like behavioral therapy, support groups, metal health care, family services and substance use monitoring to help patients.
There are risk factors that have been identified to put adolescents at risk for drug use. What can we do as a community to aid in the awareness of substance abuse and reduce risk factors? A prevention program can be a valuable tool. One of the goals of a community prevention program is to minimize their risk factors and increase its protective factors. Development of anti-drug policies in schools and in the workplace are examples of protective factors that the community would benefit from.
The concept of drug use was not always seen as problematic. Instead, students viewed substance use as a means of remedying negative emotions as a sign of addiction. Overall students were able to recognize and share how their peers and close relations had suffered from this type of use, rather than admit that they personally had used substances as a means of self-medicating negative emotions. The idea of using drugs to remedy negative emotions was also named use “as a source of happiness” or a “means of escape.” Despite these different descriptions all of these concepts have roots in dislocation causing addictive behaviors.
All of these programs help students out but most importantly they do it because they want to see their students succeed in life.
Since most centers treat specific types of addiction like drugs or alcohol, it is of great importance to understand what type of substance you are addicted to. If you are addicted to alcohol, an Alcohol Treatment Center is best to help you to become sober. If you are addicted to prescription drugs, a drug rehab center is the ideal de-addiction place for you.
D.A.R.E. Program called Anti-drug and Alcohol education program created in 1983 to help educate young people about the ills in which stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education Which calls for the early education of adolescents, which originally started by educating young kids but in recent years it changed to include k-12 but focusing on 5th and 6th graders. The program was designed to keep underage youth away from drugs and alcohol because it was believed then that drug and alcohol usage was on the rise in the United States which lead to the major funding to the program by our government. The D.A.R.E education program has been one that garnered much attention in the 1990’s and early 2000’s because of much positive feed back from both education officials and parents. It was believed that substance abuse was a national issue and should be taken care of at a national level. It was believed that in the United States drug abuse was a major issue among young individuals because it affects their minds and would cause it was believed a major mind effect among young children and may mess up their school performance or mess up their life in general. Once it became a focus of D.A.R.E 80% of schools nationwide in the United States and over 40 Nations worldwide it’s focus was to implement this program and shoot for Long term successes by educating the youth it would need at least a decade to figure if this specific program was effective. This program was offered to every youth in
