The extracurricular activity to which I have devoted the most time is marching band. I marched alto saxophone when I was in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades and I have been drum major (also known as field commander) since my sophomore year of high school. Having this job has been a huge responsibility, but it has been an invaluable learning and leadership experience. There are very few positions in high school, or even as a teenager in general, that can offer the leadership opportunities that being drum major can. The role of a drum major is to conduct a marching band, essentially serving as a metronome to set the tempo for the group. While this is the most obvious role of a drum major, and the one that the public sees during a performance,
I believe every successful drum major should be confident, dedicated, and assertive. Being confident makes the band feel secure and builds trust. Nobody wants a drum major who is going to make the band feel vulnerable. Another quality is dedication to the job, you should always be on time. Commitment shows the people
The role of a Drum Major is to be a bridge between the students and the directors helping to further the director’s awareness. Drum Majors also help the band operate effectively by doing behind the scenes work ensuring everyone’s preparedness. In concert season Drum Majors are to continue to give their utmost dedication to the directors as an example to others.
One extracurricular activity that is important to me is volunteering at the Skagit Valley Humane Society. I have always enjoyed being around animals so I decided to volunteer. I can help animals that have lost everything and just need someone to love them. While volunteering I walk the dogs, clean cages or whatever the staff needs me to do. The animals love the attention they get and only want to be loved. This experience made me realize that caring for animals is something I enjoy doing.
My junior year of high school I auditioned and became a drum major. This means that I am one of the leaders of the band, and my voice is one of the ones that needs to be heard. My voice, however, cannot overpower the others involved in the band. Marching band has taught me leadership skills in which that I can now have
I spend a large amount of time helping out, sorting and copying music, and doing other things that are needed. I have dedicated almost all of my time to band this year, whether that be marching band, concert ensembles, Grand View Wind Ensemble, jazz band, or the honor bands I did this year. I changed my outlook on our program and knew it was the program I wanted to be the most involved in throughout high school.
I have been in a few school activities. One of the main activities that I have been involved in is Color guard. Since my sophomore year, I have been on the guard and participating in all of the competitions with the band. It is a great way to get involved, make new friends, and create new experiences. I am also in my school’s National Honor Society which is an organization that consists of the top academic scholars. We do volunteer work and do activities that display integrity. We have done blood drives as well as packaged food for Kids Against Hunger. That is another organization that people can do to help package food for children across seas that don’t have any source of nourishment. I am an active thespian which is a group of sorts that is dedicated to the fine arts. I have been one since my freshmen year and have been either stage manager or assistant stage manager for two plays and three musicals. My junior year as well as this year I was involved in National
A Drum Major is a positive role-model; someone who others can look to as an enthusiastic and dedicated example. A Drum Major ultimately leads the band, and does so energetically and humbly. Respecting those around you and gaining the respect and trust of peers is essential. As Drum Major, one is expected to treat others with kindness and integrity. A Drum Major is someone who is fully involved and invested in their band and peers, and is someone who works to serve others. As a Drum Major, one must put the band first and support those around him or her. Effective communication skills are imperative, as a drum major must have an effective voice, yet also be an effective listener. A Drum Major
When I'm not in school I have Since my freshman year I have been doing marching band. As a sophomore I took my position as a upperclassman to help my freshman to the best of my ability. I help the freshman in my section to read drill, marching techniques, and how to play the music. While doing that I also do activities with my Girl Scout troop. I have been in Girl Scouts since the 4th grade and that has been a wonderful learning experience. From learning the ways of sales, to taking educational trips around the state i have grown in skill and character. Also for the last 3 years I have been the 2nd in highest cookie sales so that has been been very beneficial. Then during the summer I volunteer at the Durham Art's Council's Summer Camp as
On a whim in fifth grade, I decided that I wanted to learn how to play an instrument. I had never thought about how important it would become, but it has become a primary part of my life. I think this reason starts with you. You made learning music more entertaining for 10 year olds who don't have the first clue as to what they're doing. Not only did you teach me the fundamentals of it, but you created a love for it through opportunities and encouragement.
The position of drum major is a vital role in the entire team of a marching band. As the 2017 drum majors we promise that we will have the band in mind when making decisions and when developing the best show possible. As a group we know that we posses the necessary qualities of a drum major.
The only extracurricular activity I am a part of as of now, is Key club. I am an active member and commit approximately 20 hours of community service a semester. In Middle School I was a part of NJHS, Student Congress, and WEB (middle school equivalent to Link Crew). Within the next year, I plan on joining NHS as well as Link Crew.
Marching band directors are masterful musicians who are well trained in music theory, history, musicianship, and artistry. Being an accomplished musician isn’t enough. It is also good to be an excellent teacher. To be effective you must balance musical artistry. Being proficient is great. A thoughtful attention to artistry, quality of music, and movement is a good thing to have. A creative show design is needed. Once a marching band season is over, high school band directors should be prepared to switch to concert band (Want to Become a Marching Band Director).
When I was in my first year of high school, I had plenty of space for electives, so I had decided to take keyboard since I had taken it before in middle school and enjoyed it. I enjoyed being in the music wing and being around talented and creative people, so my second year of high school I decided to join the marching band.
I worked hard and showed how much I wanted to be in charge of leading color guard and that's what I did. I would stay a little later to help pack up, did what I was always told and even did things to help without being asked. I would like to expand and improve my leadership skills and becoming Drum Major would be a great way to so. My skills that show my leadership abilities include: working well with others, highly motivated for the best, enthusiastic about what I’m doing and good communication skills. Last season, being one of two Flag Captains meant I had to work together with someone. We would talk out any ideas or conflicts either between us or something happening among the guard. Then we could work together on portraying our ideas or concerns to the guard and they could communicate back to us which is always
As a kid I always wanted to play the drums. When I was three years old my godmother gave me my first drum. It was a blue plastic remo drum that I love and I still have. It has white stripes that go vertically and it has two black remo pin strip drum heads. Drumheads are the surface, which you strike with a drumstick to produce a sound. The drum came with a pair of cheap plastic remo brand drumsticks. That I hardly use became if I do, I would probably break the drumsticks.
