The dust bowl was given the name dirty thirties for a good reason. It was a terrible time to be a Oklahoman citizen because there was giant menacing dust storms that covered homes in dust, a terrible drought that left oklahoma looking like a desert in some places, and no jobs which caused lots of people to leave Oklahoma. The drought happened because to many farmers were working at the same time never giving the soil a break which ultimately led to the drought happening in the first place(www.history.com). The top soil that was left behind from all this farming got caught up in the wind and created gigantic clouds of dust that traveled all across america and covered homes in dust. The biggest of all these dust storms occurred on April 14th, 1935. They called the day Black Sunday because the cloud of dust was so big it covered the whole horizon. People who got caught in the storm said there was absolutely no light once it hit them, and it felt like sand being thrown at your face if you happened to be caught up in the storm. During the Dust Bowl time period there was a drought. This was one of the worst droughts ever to occur on American soil. It made the dirt very dry,and this wasn't good because the dirt was already loose from the farming. The drought lasted the whole dust bowl. Many people moved to California so they wouldn't have to deal with all the problems in the southern plains. The Oklahomans that moved there weren't having the greatest time either because the people from California didn't like people from oklahoma. They called us plies and would separate us from everybody else. So moving away was a little bit better of a option,but not much.the drought was terrible,and had a major contribution to the dust bowl.
