James Dean. Jimi Hendrix. Just a few whom have become legends for dying young. Some say it is necessary to perish at a youthful age to become a legend, but is this actually the case? Absolutely not. To be a legend means to be an idol. To be a legend means to be remembered. In our modern society, it does not matter whether one dies old or young but are focused on so much more than that. So after reading this, ask yourself this: Is dying young the only path to becoming a legend?
Today’s society is so fixated on the drama surrounding any major event, especially death. Media coverage plays a huge role in who becomes a legend and who remains forgotten, which means dying young is not the reason people become legends. Michael Jackson, died at age

Famous historical figures such as Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Nelson Mandela are still imprinted in everyone’s’ mind as being talented, influential people. None of them died young although all are remembered for their achievements in life. Leonardo Da Vinci is best known for his painting the ‘Mona Lisa’ and his several great inventions like the parachute, flying machine and aerial screw (helicopter). Unfortunately, he died at 67. Michelangelo is largely known for his artistic skills, especially his painting on the Sistine Chapel ceiling and his sculpture ‘David’. Michelangelo, after all his well-known achievements, died at the age of 88. When people think of Nelson Mandela, he is thought as an influential person who stood firm for his country and even won a Nobel peace prize. We all remember Nelson Mandela as a brave man who said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” (Mandela N, n.d.) To the world’s devastation, Mandela died at the age of 95 due to a prolonged reparatory infection. To say that is necessary to die young to become a legend is ridiculous. These legends have shaped our world and not one of them died young. These men died at an old age but have left some of the biggest legacies that will be remembered for generations. Their work

On Death and Dying By Elisabeth Kubler-Ross For my book review, I read On Death and Dying, by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. Dr. Kubler-Ross was the first person in her field to discuss the topic of death. Before 1969, death was considered a taboo. On Death and Dying is one of the most important psychological studies of the late twentieth century. The work grew out of her famous interdisciplinary seminar on death, life, and transition. In this paper, I give a comprehensive book review as well as integrate topics learned in class with Dr. Kubler-Ross' work. Like Piaget's look at developmental stages in children, there are also stages a person experiences on the journey toward death. These five stages are denial/isolation, anger, bargaining,
When a celebrity passes, if it is something that the world does not agree with, that is what they are remembered for. Their whole career is forgotten. Take Michael Hutchence and David Carradine, they are unfortunately remembered for not their long careers but from passing with autoerotic asphyxiation.
Dean’s image resonated with the younger generation of the 1950’s because it symbolized all of the conflict between generations coupled with the angst and rebellion that the fed up teens of that decade felt. He died at a young age but left behind an iconic image that is easily recognizable to this day. He was once quoted to have said ““Dream as if you'll live forever, Live as if you'll die today.” In an eerily prophetic "Behind the Camera" segment of the ABC series "Warner Bros. Presents" in July 1955. James Dean offered advice for young drivers by closing the interview with "Take it easy driving. The life you might save might be mine." James Dean died shortly following the interview and the segment never aired. (http://www.imdb.com/name/ nm0000015/bio). Were it not for the accident that claimed the life of the young Dean, it is doubtful that he would have been the cultural icon that he is today. He is famous because he died early. He was not famous before his death, in fact he had only starred in one motion picture that had been released. Two more had completed filming but were released after his death. Certainly his image is famous but has staying power because "He represents eternal youth," The opinion of some is that "If James Dean had lived, he wouldn't be the icon he is. He'd just be an old guy, like [Marlon] Brando or Montgomery Clift or any of the
The well-being and safety of your aging loved one is important to you. Since you cannot be with them every day, you want to make sure they are receiving the best care possible. Although, you know that your senior loved one needs assistance at home they might not be as open to the decision. There are things that you can do to communicate your worries and concerns with your aging senior.
Inspirations, such as Mozart and William Shakespeare, have been dead for centuries and yet everyone still knows about them and what they accomplished. If someone were to die tomorrow, you would not be able to physically touch or hold them, however, it does not mean you are going to stop mentioning them or what they have done for you and for others. People die all the time, but the gravity of their death is different because of how they lived and what they strived for while living. However, this is often dependent upon the quality of life that was lived by the individual. Fame is not the driving force behind a legacy; however, consistency and passion are the driving forces that can help prolong the duration of a person’s legacy. The very accomplishments that people have achieved in their lives is what make them a household name and is what people embody to continue on their legacies long after they are dead and gone. Eric Wilson gave examples such as, “if one were to ask a person off of the street to name the smartest person he or she could name, more than likely, that person would be Albert Einstein. Likewise, throughout the history of music, there have been several outstanding people, such as Beethoven or Mozart, whose names have become household names” (Wilson, 2011). These examples prove that even after death, the things they have done in their lives will be
“The term ‘aging out’ refers to children within a state’s foster care system who are still in the system upon reaching the age of majority or when they have graduated from high school” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). Many of these children “have not found permanency with an adoptive family … or they have not been able to return to their biological parents” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). A child typically ages out at 18 years, “but some states have extended services beyond this age because so many young adults are just not ready to be thrust out into the world on their own at such a young age” (Craft, 2017, Aging Out). If a foster parent chooses to continue parenting the foster child once they have aged out of the system, they are able to as long as the foster youth is okay with this. If an individual continues fostering a child, they will no longer receive money from the state.
of course I feel that it is ok for my friends to re-enlist for honor and self pride, and of course they are still my friends, i worry about them too, but i don't care about my pride anymore. I care about living and being able to see the light of day that will come so graciously. I can't live in this much longer i don't want to freeze to death. I will do everything i can to avoid getting anywhere near this war furthermore. I will not re-enlist even if my life depends on it. If it does, so be it.
In this poem, the author writes a letter to a young athlete. He explains, that when you are in high school and breaking records and making history it is an incredible achievement. Although, when eventually you are also going to be beaten out, and someone new will take your record. Then the question arose, “Is it best to die young, once you’ve broken records, so that you don’t have to witness your hard work to also vanish from someone else?” Throughout my high school career, I have broken the record of all-time scoring in women’s basketball at WHS. It is a huge honor, and I am blessed to hold that title. I believe that even though, one day someone will break my record, I would still want to be around to witness such. I know what I did, what I accomplished, and I still hold all the memories of those four years of high school basketball, so watching someone also succeed and take on that honor after me would be amazing. I wouldn’t want to miss out on watching another young athlete succeed. Obviously, another significant text that we read second semester would be Alfred Edward Housman’s poem To An Athlete Dying
Lastly, why do I agree with Housman that aging brings sadness to an athlete? Looking at Lines 16-20 of, “To an Athlete Dying Young,” we see Housman’s idea of a dying athlete. “Now you will not swell the rout of lads that wore their honors out, runners whom renown outran and the name died before the man.” This quote explains that once the athlete had many fans that adored him, but as time went by lost fans and became a normal person, not someone they looked up to. I agree with Housman on this poem with the fact of sports today. Sports today focus on the young, strong, and non-injured players to bring in wins not losses. As an athlete ages we see that their fan base is changed because those fans like the young athletes more now than they like the older athlete. Even with this happening in sports teams today, we have to see these athletes are still considerably young with ages in the thirties, forties, and fifties. That is young
1.) Explain how the answers to the self-inventories in the text concerning facts, attitudes, beliefs and feelings about death reflect our societal understanding or lack of understanding of death. I think that the self- inventory question reflected on both our understanding and lack of understanding about death related topics. Some of the answers to the questions on the inventory I knew without look at the answers, but some of the answers actually surprised me. The question about the death certificate was one of the questions that actually surprised me. I assumed before I did the inventory that every death certificate had a specific cause of death that was given on the certificate. Another answer that
Throughout history a vast number of people whether real or fictional have been embedded into our culture, and these people have had some sort of impact or significant meaning which made them icons above the rest. Some people were remembered for inspirational reasons, like Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks. Other figures in our popular culture, like Elvis Presley, The Beatles and Michael Jackson, will forever stick out based on their natural charisma and ability to entertain. Some people will be remembered for political reasons and others for their ingenuity, unfortunately some significant characters will be remembered for diseases, addiction and worst of all death.
As American citizens, we are protected by individual liberties and the Bill of Rights. The purpose of the Bill of Rights is simple; it is to ensure that the American citizens are guaranteed a substantial number of personal freedoms. What if a person’s dying wish was to die on his or her own terms? Dying on peoples own terms, seems like it would be a constitutional freedom, but sadly, it is not. Image a loved one, a friend, or a family member struck with immeasurable pain faced with a terminal and intolerable illness. This patient would have to go through agonizing pain to fight a battle they cannot win, for the disease has already won. When faced with pain and death, neither the government, nor doctors should have a say other than the patients themselves when choosing to end their life. The decision or ‘the Right To Die’ is solely for that person to make. The decision to end one’s life should be a personal freedom.
For this paper, I had the privilege of interviewing one of my friend’s grandmother. Her name is Jamie Hansen and she is a healthy and active 68-year-old grandmother. In the beginning of the phone call, I asked some basic background knowledge questions such as how many grandkids she has and if she was a widower or not. I found out that she and her husband are happily married and that she has six grandchildren. As I got to know her more I started asking questions that pertained to the interview aspect of social theories. I figured out that Mrs. Hansen’s responses led to an application of the continuity and socioemotional selective theories.
