I”m not a regular student at Slippery Rock University. I'm a Student who has a learning difference which is Dyslexia. That means that it is harder for me to read and write so it takes me a lot longer to do my homework, study, and take tests. That is what made me the person i am today. I have found ways to get around my Dyslexia.
There are some challenges that I face in school every day. One is that I have dyslexia making reading and writing two of my weaknesses. However, for me I found out that when I get to listen to a homework assignment, a test, my book, or a teacher, I tend to take more information from it rather than trying to read from a textbook.
Here are some strategies that help me to learn. One strategy that I found works
My struggle to read usually ended up with me taking well over an hour to get my assignment done. I didn’t know at the time, but that extra amount of effort and time would become a constant occurrence in my life. It is my struggle with dyslexia is something in my life that goes unnoticed that has given me so much appreciation for my education.
From a young age Stephen was told that he wouldn't amount to much in life. His teacher's flunked him in first grade and fourth grade and was asked to leave the school so he transferred to a new school. He then flunked tenth grade and once again was asked to leave so you would also think that this kid wouldn't amount to much in life.
The client has problems with a learning disability: dyslexia. Also the client lacks the ability to speak English, his first language is Spanish. Lastly, the client presents a severe case of shyness resulting in bullying form his peers at school. This school counselor will help the client to identify problems, create new skills to tackle the problems, and will help the client become aware of negative behaviors he has to transform the current negative situation into a positive one. First, this counselor will assess strategies, goals, and implementation of plans for working with this client’s special needs issues (ACA, 2014). It is imperative that counselors understand, assess, and raise awareness to their clients on present behaviors. Second,
I am a student that has had to work hard for as long as I can remember in achieving my goals, dreams, both personal as well as academically. After many years of testing, I was diagnosed with dyslexia in my sophomore year of high school. Dyslexia is a congenital language process disorder. It can hinder reading, writing, spelling and sometimes speaking. Dyslexia is not a sign of poor intelligence
One of my primary focuses was to find out how different literatures dealt with Dyslexia and how best to support the child. Dyslexia can be described from a number of different perspectives as we see in Ball et al (2007) who explain that it can be “how one learns (Cognition), what parts of the brain are involved (neurology), what genes are involved (genetics) and behaviour (p14). Their book entitled ‘Dyslexia: An Irish perspective’ is very relevant to my research as it gives a great insight into the history of the special education sector in Ireland. It also looks into some of the key debates that are facing the educational sector today.
When hearing the word Dyslexia what comes to mind? Nothing? Knowing the basic concepts about dyslexia can help teacher get a better understanding to help students improve and excel in school. It helps the students with improving their comprehension skills and getting a better grasp on phonics skills. Lastly, it can improve preparations for test and or quizzes. The problems caused by dyslexia will be reviewed with the goal of better understanding the condition so that we can better help students who have dyslexia improve in their reading comprehension skills, improve their ability to study better, and do better in school.
Question 1: The main idea of this selection is to understand the effect of the disability called dyslexia.
The Rose Review (2009) defined dyslexia as “a learning difficulty that primarily affects the skills involved in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling” (Rose, 2009). Dyslexia is classed as a Specific Learning Difficulty; it is neurological rather than psychological or physical. Research shows that dyslexia is inherited through genetics, with roughly 15 % of the British population carrying the genetic profile linked to dyslexia (The British Dyslexia Association , 2015). It is also noted that dyslexia occurs independently of intelligence and is generally more common amongst males. Dyslexia can have a significant impact on education and pupils literacy skills, as well as impacting their ability to acquire vital organisational and time management strategies key to success in everyday life.
Growing, developing and learning are the facts of life for all children. Each day children are faced with many new concepts and various challenges. Can you imagine how it feels for a child to face not only new challenges life has, but to face these challenges while living with a learning disability? These challenges are met not just when they begin school either. Students suffer from learning disabilities from the moment they begin learning, not when they start school. Learning disabilities are real and they affect millions of people. “One such disability that affects over approximately 15 percent of the total American population is dyslexia” ( Nosek 5).
Due to the lack of the ability to read, spell, and process information noramly dyslexics are, by nature, constantly overcompensating. This overcompensation can be directed in varis ways. Once I become disciplined enough to direct this overcompensation towards success I found myself viewing my dyslexia as a positive aspect of my life. School is and will always be three times harder for me as an individual because of dyslexia, but because of dyslexia I have already learned how to work three times harder than most to reach my goals. This is a lesson that will aid me tremendously throughout my future. I truly believe that I am more driven and goal orientated because I have learnt how to manage my dyslexia in a positive manner. This study is about the correlation of parents with dyslexia and their children’s increased risk of developing dyslexia. The literacy skills of the parents and the characteristics of children are studied. This study used experimental research grouping familial risk dyslexic and familial non-dyslexic with a controlled group. This study also used correlation looking at arithmetic, reading, rapid naming, and phonological awareness of those at risk.
The utmost important trait that I learned while dealing with dyslexia is having a great work ethic. As a dyslexic, I knew I had to try harder in other classes where other kids didn’t especially in a foreign language. This shows with my grade in sign language, I was struggling to comprehend the idea of translating English to another language. I had to work harder than the other kids and make sure to keep up a great work ethic just so I could receive a decent grade in my class. Children in their younger years as well as older years face typical problems. If these problems are known as early as possible, there are major chances of it being cured. Dyslexia is one such problem that relates to a learning difficulty leading to problems associated with spelling, reading, and writing. It has become a common problem though with proper and adequate treatment it can become better and be cured too. Some of us in the world may have problems with reading, spelling, and other academics. You might not know why they cannot read or spell as well as you can because they have a disorder. This disorder is called dyslexia. People with dyslexia struggle with: listening, reading, writing, spelling, and even handwriting. However, having dyslexia doesn’t mean that they are not intelligent. Students at a young age can have poor attitudes towards other students who are diagnosed with a learning disabilities or mental illness. This can end up causing problems with peer relationships, depression, low self-teem and others. In a recent study by Bellanca and Pote (2013) they did a study that focus on children’s attitude towards ADHD, depression and learning disabilities. The children were exposed to vignettes describing another child who is either diagnosed with ADHD, depression, learning disability, or a child with no disability. After that they were asked to rate the amount of contact they have had with the child they chose.
