Dystopia In Ayn Rand's Anthem

By the conclusion of the story Anthem, Equality 7-2521 has changed his mind and become very judgmental of the leaders of his society, denouncing them in many terms. Because of what the leaders made equality do, his actions were very understandable. The way they controlled his life and made him do things he did not want to do were very harsh. I feel as if equalities actions were correct. And here are some reasons why.

Anthem depicts an autocratic society, a ruler having absolute power, Anthem is portrayed as the future from the Unmentionable Times. The society in Anthem is lacking advanced technology, they live in a “technologically primitive society.” In this book there are several instances that cause question about the citizen’s knowledge and their regulations compared to our modern day society. The characters’ actions and dialogue establishes the view of how their society lacks technology and how they are mentally restricted by having to think a certain way. Throughout the book Anthem shows more of a dystopian society rather than utopian society. The inhabitants of the society are clueless they just know what The Council knows and that seems to be very little.

1) In dystopian societies, an identifying characteristic often found is uniformity, or the idea that all citizens are equal. This can be seen in Ayn Rand's Anthem. In her novel, she describes a quote inscribed "[o]ver the portals of the Palace of the World Council ... cut in the marble... 'We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever'" (19). The ideals of the society in Anthem are based upon the conformity of its people. Even little things - such as names - are too personalized, and the citizens are given serial numbers instead.

In the novella, Anthem by Ayn Rand, the Council of Scholars believe that having the society and community as one whole instead of it being where the people are treated as individuals, is the best choice for all of the people. It is a sin if someone thinks about being alone and if you have thoughts or actions that go against the choice of being one whole. They worship the laws that say none among men may be alone, ever and at any time.

America is more of a dystopia because we have the power and money to do whatever we want too. In Anthem they had 1 ruler he had the money and power at his fingertips he could have ended the word mad it heaven made it hell and he chose hell he wanted to make sure that they knew that they had no purpose but to do what the people with purpose tell them to do.
