Dystopian Society In James Dashner's The Maze Runner

Stories have been shared for as long as there has been a developed sense of culture among the human species. Whether they be orally or written down, they have been there and often share a few universal themes. From the epic novel Beowulf that was one of the first stories to ever be written down to a very recent novel called The Maze Runner, by James Dashner, the universal themes are there if you look far enough. In The Maze Runner a dystopian society is the basis of the thrilling science fiction story that is centered around teenagers who are placed into the middle of a life threatening maze and tested to see whether they could survive. A set of rules or regulations that is either directly stated, or is just generally understood information by all members. In The Maze Runner, there are specific rules to keep the Glade safe and the members ignorant of anything outside. When Thomas first arrives in the Glade, the leader Alby shows him around and explains, “We only have three rules. First, do your part. Second, never harm another Glader. Most importantly, never go beyond those walls,” ( The Maze Runner). While these rules seem simple enough to follow, the third one proves to be the divide between Thomas and everyone else. He consistently breaks this rule and is punished for it once Alby is no longer the true leader. Throughout the punishments and the criticism, he still maintains his justification of his disobedience until he leads them out of the Maze. Every story that is centered around a dystopian society has that one character that starts the rebellion against unjust rules. That character is the reason that the reader keeps on. Will they succeed and create a better system that is more fair? Or will they fail and potentially pay for it fatally? The reader will never know until they finish the
