Some people may have serious health problems that make it impossible for them to leave their home. A person may not be able to find a group to join due to geographical limitations. A person may reside in an isolated rural area that doesn’t have those types of groups available. Group sessions may not coordinate with a person’s daily schedule. Benefits of E-Groups An older adult may use an e-group as a “life review group” (Gladding, pg. 309). This can allow members; to “share stories and memories” with other older adults in the e-group” (Gladding, pg. 309). This type of group can “build supportive community that may not be available otherwise” (Gladding, pg. 309). Many members find that they feel much more “empowered after joining this type of group” (Gladding, pg. 309). Finally this type of on-line engagement can increase a person’s “psychological and physical well-being” (Gladding, pg. 309). Conclusion As technology increases so does our ability to stay connected. A group living environment is designed to meet the specific needs of individuals in situations that are as normal as possible rather than institutional care.
At one point in a person life, they will participated in a group whether it is part of a specific committee, therapy, or social group. In recent years, there has been a rise in counseling within a group forum veering from the tradition individual counseling. Therapists, physiologist, and counselors believe that form of counseling is beneficial to both counselor and client. This allows the counselor to help several clients at once rather than one at a time decreasing their strenuous workload and demanding work hours. This form of counseling integrate individual that share similar issues, struggles, and experiences into one forum. The power of support groups, especially when peer run can have a sign cant impact on the individual. It is vital to realize that “Compared to recent group members, longstanding group members used less medication and treatment services, had higher levels of well-being and less neurotic distress” (Solomon, 2009). Many of them also became leaders of the groups. Many times while I have personally sat in on our Hope and Recovery Group (Peer Lead), I have seen a massive shift in many of the people in our group. The socialization of each individual is profound! Many of the group members never said a word for months and now they are vibrant, full of zeal and vivaciousness. An interesting point that is brought up by Ley is the statement that “People
Mental health services conducted on the Internet have been described as e-therapy, online counseling, e -mail therapy, Internet-based therapy, and similar terminology. When first hearing the word group, people normally picture about 5 people hanging out as friends but there are many different types of groups that we don’t even realize in our day to day lives. When I hear the word group I think of people who have the same beliefs or values. This definition when you think about it is far from correct, there are groups everywhere and they don’t always believe the same values. Groups can be very helpful in the human service field. There are many different types of groups in the human service field anywhere from groups of workers all working toward a common goal to a group of people who need to talk about the problems they are facing in life. No matter the different types of groups they all have a common
There is a delicate balance that needs to be achieved to create the right conditions for members to work harmoniously together. Individuals whose problems deviate from the norm should not be included in the group. Individuals who have mental disabilities which hinder their ability to comprehend the purpose of the meeting would not attend. Cultural perspectives need to be considered as well. For example, many middle eastern women would not feel comfortable participating in an intimate group setting where they disclose personal information in the presence of men. A journaling activity could be implemented in in the middle phase, once trust is established in order to help members identify their behavioral patterns that are both positive and negative, based off cognitive behavioral theory. The group members will share their reflections and support one another, reinforcing the behavioral change, and also identify negative and dysfunctional behavior patterns. Mutual aid takes place as the members of the group are able to identify with the reflections of others and as a group objectively assess the findings and work to modify behavior in the

Support groups bring together people facing similar issues, whether that's illness, relationship problems or major life changes. Members of support groups often share experiences and advice. It can be helpful just getting to talk with other people who are in the same boat. While not everyone wants or needs support beyond that offered by family and friends, you may find it helpful to turn to others outside your immediate circle. A support group can help you cope better and feel less isolated as you make connections with others facing similar challenges. A support group shouldn't replace your standard medical care, but it can be a valuable resource to help you cope (Staff, 2013).
