This semester in ENGL 210, I have learned about most forms of business writing as well as the various means of communication used in the business world. Along with this understanding, I have also learned how to write many different kinds of letters both formally and informally. In this class, I have written a bad news letter, a cover letter, and a thank you letter all with correct formatting, styling, and pacing. We also learned about memo format and had to write two for class. Along with memos and letters, we also wrote a resume and filmed an elevator pitch. Although I already had a resume, the one I created in class was a lot higher quality, and I now use an edited form of it to apply for summer jobs. The elevator pitch is a little to unedited
Everyone is likely to experience some form of discrimination or prejudice; as is anyone capable of acting prejudiced towards others. On April 5th, 1968, a teacher in Riceville, Iowa named Jane Elliot conducted an experiment with her third grade class that dealt with the concept of discrimination; and was documented in Peters’ 1985 ‘A Class Divided’. The exercise originally took place the day after Martin Luther King was assassinated. The documentary is an eye opener to the world of racism and discrimination. Bucher (2010) describes racism as “discrimination based on the belief that one race is superior to another” (97). According to Bucher (2010) “discrimination is defined as the
Writing may come naturally for some people, but for me, it does not. This class will be challenging- as it is a college course- but that does not mean that I am not going to try my best to receive an A, and meet all of the expectations this semester. Even with it not coming naturally, I do know tasks that improve my writing, like being able to analyze the purpose, audience, and rhetorical strategies used by other writers (syllabus 2). In my AP Language class I took last year the concept of being able to come up with those three things was heavily stressed; therefore, we did multiple practice worksheets and wrote essays where we would have to come up with those things. On page 3 in the guidebook, it says that we should know how to write and
I had my appointment on the previous week at the Writing center. I brought my 2nd project for ENGL 160 class. I scheduled tutor to “face to face”, because I think it is the best way to improve all of my mistakes. Before going to Writing center, I was thinking that this tutor doesn’t help me at all, but fortunately my thoughts was wrong and I enjoyed 1 hour of editing my project.
As a Para, I have to take a class with our ELL students so I can interpret for them in the event they cannot understand something. Although the teacher in this specific class is a great teacher, in my opinion, his communication skills are frightening the kids. Last week the students got the results of the last test and most of the kids did not do well. His speech went on for almost twenty minutes, telling the kids how upsetting it was to have such bad scores when everything is provided to them; that they needed to pay more attention to the class and do their homework, etc.…. during this time his face turned red, and his body language became stiff. He repeated himself over and over again. It was so bad; I wanted to run out of the class
How many hours of work per day or per week did you generally put into the course?
I selected assignment 6.11 because I just liked my poem and because it was made from scratch my other poems were based of my old ones. This assignment doesn't show anything i'm just trying to improove my grade. I was very mad doing this assighnment I almost rage quited. It was so anoying I couldn't think of anything, but I pulled through.I don't want to improove anything on this assignment because I like it and I got 30/30 and this is good so i'm happy.
The best class I have taken here at UNL is Human Anatomy (BIOS 214). I am currently enrolled in this class for the fall semester but I believe I have gained more knowledge in this class to help me in the future than any class previous to it. Anatomy is a very strenuous course and takes a great amount of time during the week to learn the material given but worth the hard work at the end of the semester. I want to enter physical therapy school after my undergraduate degree and this course really guides you in that direction of professional school. It builds on topics learned in other classes and really fills in concepts that you previously didn’t know or take the time to learn during other classes. This course really gives you an understanding
According to Charlsie Dewey lecture in the 2016 who cares? Why Bother? Real Writing for Real People” seminar; held at Grand Rapids Community College. She covers the section on Professional Writing: Cover letters, Resumes, Emails, Social Media and More. Charlsie Dewey is a professional write and journalist for the Grand Rapids business journal; she covers many key qualities to have in the professional world. Such as how to organize a resume and cover letter that leans you in the position you want without having a desired position stated or objective. Dewey explains the importance of the layout, font and word choose. She says “a great resume mimics words or phrases from the job description”. (Dewey).
I have always found that it is far better to be controversial than boring; thus, my English 204 class would promote debates about societies most heated issues. Predominately, a lot of students enter college adhered to the values instilled by their parents. I find this to be rather toxic because it suppresses one’s individuality. My lectures would be a physical release from society’s grasp and would allow students to truly explore themselves. I think an important aspect of education is the ability to establish a clear position after researching both sides. Therefore, for one of the assignments, I would pick a controversial topic like abortion, religion, or politics—and have the students write a brief response establishing their position. Then,
The MCHS class of 2017 started in school 13 years ago. At the start nothing seemed to particularly stand out about this class, but little did everyone know that this class would one day completely change Mariposa schooling. Now, I have been following this class for all 13 years of its school life and have observed and participated in many of the events that have happened. This class was the last class to go on the Fresno Zoo trip on Amtrak in second grade, the last class to get to go to the middle school, the first class to be shoved back into the elementary schools for eighth grade, and the last class to avoid common core (for some of us that is). I suppose that you could ask just why is this class known for such bad behavior when they’ve
Looking back on Unit 2 Discussion 1, I did a poor job with the first paragraph. I am not sure if that is the way I type it or if the system put it in that order. I have noticed that when I bring the work over from Microsoft Word it is in a different format. The first paragraph is too small. I also found it is lacking more important information. However, I learned more this weekend and expect to write better papers moving forward. I plan to pay more attention to the format of the paper when it bought over from Word. I tried critical review with the paper, but of course I find no other errors and neither did my instructor (laughing).
Despite having a packed schedule, I did manage to work on and improve some of my persuasive business writing skills. Writing a persuasive memo without sounding aggressive can be challenging. The goal of a persuasive memo should be to introduce an issue to an audience and persuade the readers to take voluntary action according to your proposition. Remember, the readers do not
The writing I have been in class this semester most definitely relates to my other classes because they involve writing analytical and response papers, but when I return to my classes pertaining to my major it would not so much relate because for the part scientist want the answer to be as brief as possible. This does not say i will not encounter writing again because my GWAR class would involve intensive analytical writing. I believe this class provided a foundation to any of my future writing assignments. If I decide to go into research I will need to dig back into the skills i developed in English214. I know I still have a long way to go until I can consider myself a decent writer but becoming more self-aware is a great start for
Sents I was a returning 8th grade I knew how the four square elective was and I knew how to play well. The first class there were a lot of people that had no clue what was going on and had no clue how to play. That was ok though because I'm so glad that Ms. Davis had made a paper for the class to look over and understood what was going on. After we read the paper we she asked if anyone had a question, and not one person raised their hand to ask a question. When we got downstairs and started to play it was to easy for me and people kept on going out and it was bad. It was so bad that Ms. Davis had to get in and teach people how to play and she never does that. After a couple of classes most of the people that were having trouble got the hang
This lesson seemed to be successful, but if I could make changes I would have grouped the students differently. The students in this 8th grade class do not get to pick where they sit. I have created a seating chart that puts the students into mixed ability groups. The groups, for the most part, consist of at least one high ability student, one low ability student and two average ability students. Students remain in these seats for every class period and every group activity. However, on the day of this lesson I had several absent students. This left me with two groups of two students and one group with only one individual. To avoid disruption and wasted time I quickly regroup 4 out of my 6 groups. Upon reflecting on this lesson, I realized
