CPOE has been promoted very heavily for patient safety purposes to avoid medication errors, but it also can be helpful in identifying duplicate orders for services, providing cost comparisons of diagnostic studies, and alerting providers to needed preventive care services, (Amatayakul 2009). Epic believes integration is key factor to the success of health information technology (HIT) and develops their products around that philosophy.
