Question 1: Theoretical background
a) Describe the following concepts and give examples:
i) Prejudice (3)
Prejudice is a pre-held negative opinion, perception, or judgment a person holds or expresses against something or someone, without justification or analyzing facts. For example, when one meets a Muslim person, or sees someone dressed as a Muslim on a flight, one automatically perceives him/her to be a terrorist, and is suspicious or unreasonably “sure” that the Muslim person intends blowing up the plane. The negative perception was based purely on perception of the Muslim person’s religious

Other definitions include a more detailed involvement like, “…that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom, and other capabilities acquired by man as a member of society.” Culture has also been defined as “the distinctive way of life” of a group of people, or, “their design of living”. Probably the simplest definition refers to culture as shared and learned patterns of information that a group uses in order to generate meaning. An inclusive definition views culture as a composite of significant and interrelated factors, all of which have significance for the teaching and learning process.

b) Discuss five factors to illustrate the influence of culture on education. (10)
(i) Gender: Educators should take into cognizance the gender of learners when planning educational experiences since males and females allude to individual and different thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. Which influence their learning process.
(ii) Barriers To Learning: learners who experience barriers to learning, e.g. physical disabilities are now included in mainstream education; and would not be able to achieve successful learning if they are not afforded due attention to assist them in addressing and overcoming their barrier. Learning programs must be adapted to suit specific abilities.
(iii) Socio- economic
“Culture encompasses the behavior patterns, beliefs, and all other products of a particular group of people that are passed on from generation to generation” (Santrock).
Mogahed is an Egyptian-American that started her career as an engineer. She’s a Muslim that decided to wear her head covering by the age of seventeen. In the Ted Talk “What Do You Think When You Look At Me?”, Dalia Mogahed discusses the predicaments and accusations Muslims have encountered, including her personal experiences. Through the use of all three rhetorical appeals, pathos being the dominant appeal, Mogahed skillfully conveys her message to the audience that 1.6 billion Muslims shouldn’t be shunned because of the actions of a minority.
No individual can arrive at the threshold of his potentialities without a culture in which he participates. Conversely, no civilization has in it any element that the last analysis is not the contribution of an individual. Where else could any trait come from except from the behaviour of a man or a woman or a child? (253)
Since the inception of human civilization there have been countless cultures and societies which have helped shape the current world today as we know it. The modern human race dates back more than 200,000 years and in that time frame many cultures have risen to great virtue and success only to deteriorate or cease to exist altogether. First before examining one of these cultures we must know what culture truly means. The Army’s Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Culture Center defines culture as a “dynamic social system,” containing the beliefs, behaviors, values and norms of a “specific organization, group, society or other collectivity” learned, shared, internalized, and changeable by all members of the society (Watson, 2010). In
Culture is the pattern of action and the ways of perceiving, feeling, and thinking acquired growing up in a particular group of people
Culture can be defined as the behaviours and belief characteristics of a particular social, ethnic,
In the article, Muslim Misconception by Allyson Miller, it talks about the misconceptions people have about the Islamic religion. Because of the attacks on 9/11 and the current war against ISIS, many people believe that the religion is all about violence and converting people. However, that is not true. "Islam is derived from the Arabic root word 'salem ' meaning 'peace ' and is described as a religion of unity, not one of violence" (Miller, 2015, p. 16). It is ridiculous that people can label everyone associated with the religion as a terrorist when it is only the extremist who to blame. When I was in high school, my best friend was named Roda and she was Muslim. Every day when we were going to our career center, we would sit next to each other on the bus. Some days, we would talk about each other 's religions. Unlike most people, I was willing to ask questions and learn about her religion and vice
Culture is essentially a learned way of life. Typically, people within the same culture speak the same language, eat identical foods, share common values, and also behave and think in a similar ways.
collective reality that can be studied in it's own right. Various cultures develop their own cultural
Several factors affect the formation of one’s culture, Palispis, E. (2007) quoted Sir Edward Tylor, “Culture… refers to that complex whole which includes knowledge, beliefs, arts, morals, law, custom, and any other capabilities and habits acquired by man as member of society.” (Palispis, E., 2007) In this context culture is something we acquire from the people we have lived with since we were born, it is not something a person can learn overnight nor can be disposed effortlessly.
Culture is the aquired knowledge that people use to interpret, experience, and generate social behavior.
Thinking as a sociologist, you might ask yourself, why does this happen? What causes people to categorize a whole group of people solely based on their faith? What exactly causes someone to not want to sit with someone, because the other person may be wearing a hijab? When did Islamophobia spread and became an issue? What are some possible solutions?
Culture is defined as “The ideas, attitudes, customs, beliefs, values and social behaviour of a particular group of people or society that are passed on from generation to generation” (Brentnall, A., n.d.).
Culture is a system of beliefs that are shared and communicated within a certain group of
Culture is described as the symbols that individuals, groups and societies use to make decision of daily life and to assure their values. Culture is a model of basic assumptions invented, discovered or developed by a given organization as it learns to cope with its problems of external adaption and internal combination, which has worked well enough to think correctly and, so to instruct to new comers as the valid way to observe, consider and feel in relation to these problems. Culture consists of manner, mind-set, values, rituals, religious belief, law (written and unwritten), arts, ideas, custom, belief, ceremonies, social institutions, myths and legends, individual identity and behavior. Cultural pattern classifies are used to describe the dominant beliefs and values. Culture has been called the way of life for an entire society. It is a group or community living together and sharing a set of norms. Culture and society are coexistent. One does not or cannot exist without the other. Culture and society may have some common elements but the two are not the same; they are not identical.
