Special programs at the Eagle Academy
As the fulltime art teacher at the Eagle Academy for Young Men (EAFYM) Bronx campus for the past three years, I am proud to have had a significant role as a lead advisor of two special extensions ELO programs: Eagles in Flight Saturday NYC Exploration Club for 6th & 7th graders and Artack for 7th-12th graders at the Bronx campus. These programs are designed to enhance the learning experience of at-risk youth. Unlike their wealthier counterparts, students who are socioeconomically challenged do not have expansive places to play after school or a long list of activities to go to. These programs attempt to address that deficit. This paper will specifically address the philosophical and practical foundation of the NYC Exploration Club.
Eagle Academy is a private, all-boys charter school designed to change the lives of young men for the better. The school was founded in 2004 by a group of educators, parents, community leaders and corporate partners led by the One Hundred Black Men. Currently, 93 sixth and seventh grade students attend the school. The Exploration Club was designed to expose the students to a wider variety of New York historical, cultural sites and events and to give them a basic understanding of the Mass Transit System. Many of our middle school scholars take the BX42 bus and the BX15 bus, but could not tell you the BX42 ran from the Northern Bronx to the South Bronx, or that the BX15 bus
