Auricular or ear acupuncture has been around for a very long time. It is also known as Auriculotherapy or acupressure. Dr. Paul Nogier, a Frenchman, developed this form of acupuncture in 1957. Dr. Nogier is considered the, “...father of modern ear acupuncture” (Gori). There were also reports of ear acupuncture being used in, “... Ancient Egypt, Rome, Greece and all [of] the Mediterranean area” (Gori). All of the different systems of acupuncture, originated in China around 500 B.C from the book, the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine. This book implied that there were six yang meridians that were attached to the auricle of the ear. The names for the auricular points were not always what they are now. The names from, “Chinese and French auricular acupuncture points were used for many years until in 1990 the World National Organization conducted an international meeting and standardized the auricular anatomical names” (IBT Staff Report). The Sympathetic Autonomic point can balance the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The sympathetic nervous system deals with the body’s flight or fight response and the parasympathetic nervous system deals with the body’s rest and digest function. It has been known as the master point for, “...balancing sympathetic nervous system activation with parasympathetic sedation” (St.). These are the points that will help with blood circulation, reducing pain levels, treating kidney stones, and asthma. The forward helix, “... is located at the front top cartilage of your ears. The outer rim of your ear is called the helix which means that forward helix if the front side of this rim. This is where your face and ears meet” (Models). The piercing is very difficult and is painful to get because it goes through bony cartilage. It is a very unique piercing and can help out a lot if someone gets it
