First, taking ED580 and spending time with the children has made it clear to me that early childhood (bilingual) education is what I’d love to pursue as a future career. Actually, I have long been interested in early childhood education and was intended to choose that as my major for graduate school; however, my parents urged me to choose a “broader” major such as TESOL so that I can have more career choices after graduation. Although I was not willing to, I finally compromised not to my parents, but to the reality. In China, people have the deeply-rooted misunderstanding that preschool teachers are just babysitters; as a result, the requirement of educational level for preschool teachers is rather low, namely vocational high school. It may sound crazy if someone with a mater degree wants to be a preschool teacher. Thus, preschool teachers together with early childhood education are largely undervalued in China. I always know that it is silly to undermine the importance of early childhood education, but I do not have powerful evidence to back me up to change people’s thought. Now, I think I can confidently explain to others that because human development is accumulative and progressive, early inventions on the children’s dysfunctions may have the power to change their life trajectories and their fates. In the article “What Is Cultural Heritage?” it states, “Today, we find that heritage is not only manifested through tangible forms such as artefacts, buildings or landscapes but also through intangible forms.” We get more than antiques from our ancestors we get our food, genetics, values, stories, traditions, and possibly religion. Teachers receive decent pay despite what some people think, which is rather surprising because they don’t have work for three months out of the year, unless they teach summer school. However, teachers do not make as much as psychologists make in a year, psychologists make $69,250 per year, but psychologists also set their own hours, and they have an hourly rate as well as their annual income. The hourly rate causes their annual income to vary depending on the number of hours they work. While there are many similarities and differences between the two majors that are early childhood education and psychology, psychology is the far superior major because of education, benefits, and job description.

Childhood development encompasses the cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional changes from birth until the end of adolescence (White, Hayes & Livesey, 2013). Throughout childhood, environment and genetics promote or discourage growth and development. This essay will analyse the cognitive, physical, social, moral and emotional domains in relativity to my own development from the prenatal stage until adolescence. Psychological and environmental theories are used to develop the understanding and connection between each domain and stage of development. Lastly, this essay will address the controversial nature verses nurture debate and its relevance to my childhood development.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary (1828), “observation is an act of recognizing and noting a fact or occurrence.” Observation in Early Childhood is important so teachers are able to meet developmental needs of young children through evaluation and assessment. The purpose of this case study is to observe the characteristics and behaviors of a child’s stages of development in an early childhood class; the child’s dominant stages of play would also be highlighted based on Parten’s stages of play. Activities and strategies would also be recommended to improve areas in which the child can be assisted. These areas would be the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains.
