As a child I struggled significantly with literacy. Words, letters and sounds made no sense to me and I would marvel over pages filled with lines and squiggles wondering how everyone else saw something I couldn’t see. Words felt like Magic Eye Illusions; if I stared long enough maybe I could see something special there too. It wasn’t long before I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. These diagnoses, and the immediate response from my new educational team, was the safety net that kept me from slipping through the cracks. It was this life event that propelled me towards a career in education.
Throughout my elementary years amazing teachers would pull me out of classrooms into “special reading rooms” where, with their support, I was able to feel the powerful sensation of success for the first time. These teachers ignited within me a true love of learning and of literacy. I am currently seeking a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education with a concentration in reading and language arts. My first two years of teaching prepared me for the unique challenges of teaching in a Title 1 school with a high ESOL and low income population. My creative, art-infused style of teaching and learning made me a strong candidate for a new Dual Language Immersion program Cobb County was interested in rolling up into the first grade. I volunteered for the position and became the English Language Arts teacher of forty-six emerging readers and writers during my third year of teaching. While taking on this new program for Cobb County I also worked hard to earn my ESOL Endorsement. Taking classes for the program proved to me that I was capable of balancing teaching and learning simultaneously. I am hopeful to become a graduate of Thomas University. I look forward to the learning that will come and I am excited to continue on the path to higher
