Chapter two discusses various theorists that helped to mold and shape early childhood education to where it is today. There are several different theorists that contributed to the development of early childhood education. Some of these theorists include Alfred Adler, Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and John Dewey. Before getting a teaching degree, the individual will need to take regular high school classes, such as math, science, English, and psychology, have two years of a foreign language and should consider participating in a teacher’s aide program. Then one must continue onto a four year college to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. The placement for an elementary teacher is quite high and it shouldn't be that difficult to find a job. Also, to increase the chances of getting a job and to increase your salary, a person should also get a Master’s Degree. It is not required but it looks better and often helps the employability of a future education.

There are multiple characteristics needed going into this field.      Licensing requirements for preschool teachers vary by state. Some states require a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and others require certification by a nationally recognized authority. The child development associate (CDA) credential which is the most common type of certification. It requires a mix of classroom training and experience working with children. This comes along with an independent of an individual’s competence. The Encyclopedia of careers and vocational guidance 11th edition shares some requirements. “In high school you should take child development, home economics, and other classes that involve you with child care”. It also says “you’ll also need a fundamental understanding of the general subjects you’ll be introducing to preschool students, so take English, science, and math”. When I went to NAEYC conference, Nov 18-Nov 21, Orlando, Florida, I attended 4 session. One of them was “America’s Best and Brightest: New Market Research on Attracting and Retaining Early Childhood Professionals.” Because I lack English listening skills, I couldn’t understand whole contents. However, I came to know about ‘understanding the attitudes and beliefs of current educators about the profession’ and ‘identifying factors that will be most helpful in encouraging educators to make the field a long-term profession.’ I thought that these contents would be useful and helpful for our classmates, as well as me, in understanding “current preschool teacher in the United States.”

While regulation and standard are the keys to the success of a childcare facility, there are factors that I believe are equally important to be successful in an early childcare program. So, I looked for a highly qualified teacher with good communication skills. Saint Mary Academy Inc. displayed these factors upon entry to the facility. I saw degrees of teacher and directors ranging from masters to bachelor degrees specialized for the profession display behind the desk of the director for the day.

The Early Development and Learning program follows the Early Childhood Education program with the exception of the student teaching experience. Early development and learning majors take part in an internship. Students of this major are not eligible for teaching certification.

Early childhood education is one of the most important policy topics out there. Research has proven that the early years in childhood is a critical period for opportunity to develop a child’s full potential; as well as form academic, social, and cognitive skills that determine not only success in school but also their entire life (The White House). The right to a free, public education is guaranteed to all children in the United States. Early education is voluntary, and therefore some children are not given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
