EARLY INTERVENTION: A CHILD’S DEVELOPMENT, THE EFFECT OF STRESS, AND THE IMPACT OF EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS (I going to use footnotes to mark comments) For infants and toddlers with severe disabilities, the early years of development were crucial to attain optimal development (Guralnick, 2000), with an important factor the parent-child relationship. The parent(s) are the first person the child interacts with (Aydin & Yamac, 2014), continually shaping his or her social, emotional, communicative, and cognitive abilities (Landry et al., 2006, as cited in Warren & Brady, 2007, pp. 300). Conducive to this outcome, maternal responsivity and positive parenting (Dyches et al., 2012) should be key characteristics of parent-child interactions to obtain family quality of life and positive family outcomes (Raspa et al., 2010; Davis & Gavidia-Payne, 2009). As stated by Spiker et al., (2002) that should resemble a ‘‘healthy, growth-producing relationship consisting of such caregiver characteristics as warmth, nurturance, stability, predictability, and contingent responsiveness (as cited in Warren & Brady, 2007 pp. 300) .” But for parents raising a child with disabilities, this type of strong and positive parenting style sometimes goes amiss when stress overrides the parent’s emotional stability.
